Hi anyone know where the connectors might be (assuming there are some) for the fuel pump wiring between the front and back of the car. I appear to have a voltage drop at the fuel pump - maybe 7-8 bolts when cranking it over. Had similar problems with electric mirrors and cleaning/re-making the connections solved it.
Apologies for predictive text. It’s a 1985 XJ6 series 3. I thought there might be a connection somewhere in the cabin maybe right hand footwell or down the side or underneath?
Just hold on a second and lets diagnose the fault properly.
You say that the voltage is dropping to 7 to 8 volts while cranking. I assume you mean while cranking the motor over with the starter motor.
If that is the case, it is entirely normal as the whole 12 volt system will pull down to typically 8 volts with the starter engaged..
The best way to check if you have a genuine voltage drop in your wiring is to put the car in any gear other than park or neutral and turn the ignition switch to start.
The starter will not engage however the fuel pump will run. You should get roughly 12 volts at the fuel pump under those conditions.
cheers
Carl (JagCad) has it nailed down pretty much. Here is a couple of pics of the S57 wiring manual which covers our cars. This is a must-have manual and is available to copy from members here on the Forum.
Harness runs through fire wall under battery, along trans tunnel to rear seat, split L/R to interior edges of body, through the boot fire wall and into the boot. If you or the PO are/were coffee drinkers, under the console might be a good bet, lots of spilled stuff under mine.
