Default Front cat flared or not?

I've got an exhaust leak up front and the local exhaust shop suspected it was the front cat. I decided to pull it out and replace it was a Magnaflow branded cat.

Interesting thing I found was that the new magnaflow cat has a flared out end pipe whereas the original cat had a flared in end pipe. Strange. Not sure what happened here. Are all front cats on the Series III flared out at the end or some are in and some are out?

Also found that one of the front donut gasket on the cat was black all around and looked like a fresh gasket. However the rear one seamed covered with a light coating or white/rusty color. Not sure what this meant? Is this an indicator of an exhaust leak?
