Default Fun with your antenna/aerial

So, antenna didn't work since I got the car (84 XJ6 SIII VDP). Motor is running fine. Mast has been bent and the cable snapped.

I bought a used one on ebay and it arrived this week so I set about getting it installed. The first niggling problem was the guy only sent the mast, and not the motor....... oh well, I know my motor is working because I can hear it running, so I thought I'd be ok just "swapping" the mast over.

So far I've not been successful...... here's where I am right now.

The antenna that is in the car does not look like the factory antenna, although it is the correct remote style thats needed for the XJ6. The motor says Harada RZW-20 on it. The nylon chord has teeth in it. The nylon chord on the mast I bought has no teeth, it just looks like really fat fishing line. It also has nothing specila on the end, in fact mine looks like it's been cut:-(

I tried force feeding the no teeth chord into the motor (with the cover off so I could see what was going on) and not surprisingly, the motor wouldn't grab the mast.

So, clearly, I can't get a working set up with the parts I have on hand currently. My question was more about what the right parts actually are.

I could get the guy who sold me the mast to sell me the motor too, although to be honest, I'm almost 100% sure he's cut the mast wire and even if I got the motor that used to work with the mast, it probably won't work now. My other option is to buy another full harada replacement, which I can see online for a ridiculous price I was trying to avoid paying..

Any thoughts on the smooth nylon chord....... ? has it been cut ?

No, it hasn't been cut, the original Jaguar masts didn't have teeth on the push/pull cord, the end engaged in the capstan and was constrained so it pushed the mast up OK.

Thanks Fraser. I bit the bullet and ordered a new harada one, rather than try and get the motor. At least that way I should be able to start fresh and get it working

Hi Sarc

As you have just found out, (like me in the late 80s with a 1980 Series 3), these aerials can be a real PITA. Good luck with your fix.
