I have found an 1986 xj6 with 67000 original miles on it. In excellent condition for what I think is very cheap at 2000.00$. Is this a steal or should I be looking for problems?

 

The price sounds good, but I'm a little concerned about the mileage. If that has been achieved through long periods of sitting then there will probably be a lot of catchup maintenance needed before its reliable. That said; if the body, paint, and interior are good, go for it!

You can 100% count on any 34 year old car to have problems, period. No two ways around it. Especially at that price. You're buying at the low end of the scale. The best examples of that model would be 3x that price.

If the cosmetics are strong--paint, chrome, leather, little or no rust....the car might be a bargain.

Most mechanical faults on these old Jags are easy for a decent DYI mechanic to handle and parts are unusually not too expensive. It's the cosmetics that'll kill ya. If it's rusty, well, it's pretty much just a $2000 parts car.

Overall looks decent from what I can see. Paint looks weak, but that might not be important to you. A good quality repaint is many thousands of dollars.

Interior looks OK from the small amount seen. It looks black; is it? If so, that's a bit unusual and desirable....but not to the point that it makes the car more valuable.

Check for rust around the windshield and rear glass, lower corners especially. It'll be hard finding a Series III without rust in these areas but it's worth a try.

remove the floor carpet mats and then remove the foam mats under the carpet mats. Do you see any rust or water?

raise the car on a lift and check the exhaust system. Is it rusted through?

open the trunk, remove the carpet mat, remove the spare tire compartment panel, remove the spare tire. Is the floor rusty or is it solid?

Engine: check under the coolant expansion and filler tank cap: Do you see any grease mixed with coolant? That could mean a potential head gasket failure.

can you change tanks with engine running and there are no fuel leaks under each tank?

do the Turn Signals work?
do the gauges work?
does the antenna work when you turn on the radio?
and... does the A/C work?

it it does, it's a good price. If it doesn't it will cost a potato sack of dinero to repair.
