Heat coming into cabin
Hi, I can't recall if I've asked about this before. I have an early Series 1 XJ.
I've got an issue where I'm getting quite a fair of heat coming through into the cabin. Usually after about 30mins of driving. I can feel warm air through vents on the top of the dash and the facia.
I've removed the heater tap(controlled by vacuum) and replaced with a manual tap.
The vacuum in the car doesn't work. So I've taped closed the main air door that is vacuum controlled to see if that makes a difference. It hasn't.
I'm not sure the warm could be coming from, as far as I know, the heater core shouldn't be getting water. And no air should be getting into the system.
My only thought is the hot air from under the bonnet, getting in through the vents?
Just wondering if anyone has any similar problems or experience with this. Any advice/help greatly appreciated
Cheers
Michael

Hi Michael-
had a similar problem on our 71.
what I found to be wrong was that the heater control valve was hooked up to constant vacuum as opposed to the vacuum hose from the controls, which will open and close the valve.

One other thought. Even if the water valve closes, that does not mean that hot water is not present in the heater matrix. It merely means that hot water is not being circulated through it. Even with the valve closed, heat will transfer in the water pipes to and from the engine.
I figured that out and added a second valve. A simple manual on/off from the plumbing section of the local hardware. So, with both valves closed, the matrix is completely isolated from engine coolant. Voila, I have a power vent system. Works nicely in moderate weather. I call that second valve my summer/winter option. I open it in winter to get a full flow of hot coolant to the matrix.
