Default How to identify a head

Ok, so I recently took a punt on eBay for a cylinder head and I ended up winning what looks to be a complete 4.2 head for just £10 !

So, before I take it to the machine shop for a check over and freshen up etc, I want to try and find out what it actually is.

Can anyone give me some pointers on how to ID it please ?

Cheers in advance

Heads are all the same. 2.8 fits 4.2, etc.

Series 3 head has bigger valves.

In the 3.4 and 3.8 engines up to 1968, a number is stamped in the front inside of the valley where the spark plugs are. This number decodes the compression ratio, the type of head, A, B, or C head, and they were also painted in blue, orange, and goldto make it easy to identify. When the 4.2 engine appeared in the 420 model in 1966, all that cylinder head identication was stopped.

Cheers everyone. I'll get it stripped over the Christmas break and get it into the machine shop in the new year. Fingers crossed it'll be a good un and I can get it built up as a spare.
