how many others here are lumped???? And what’s the lump?? Just curious, not trying to stir anything up!

 

Although I've got used to the term, "Lump" was first put to me as a Derogatory reference to a Chevy engine grafted into a Jaguar drive train, thus 'defiling the purity of the breed.' Others don't seem to mind though.
I prefer Chevy V8 Conversion personally, and wear it proudly, but that's just me, and I'll answer to 'Lumper.'

Mine is an old style, carburetor fitted 350/700R4.

Mine is happily converted to a Chevrolet, has JAGRLET for the plates. Runs reliably and is very comfortable since I put in the PT Cruiser front seats. Latest change is adding the cup holder(s) and next is Ididiit steering column with Cruise Control and Tilt

 

Installing the LT1 in my S3 was the greatest auto adventure in my life. As I was working during the build, it took one h... of a long time.

Not driving much nowadays. but, it fires immediately and cruises so nicely.

Learned a h... of a lot doing it...

I seem to recall, that "lump" merely meant the engine of whatever specie, til it morphed in to a somewhat deragatory use...

bothers me, not.

there was a time that many expressed displeasure with us But, that seems to have vanished pretty much.

 

Actully, mre than a few have commented on the contented burble that erupts from the idling engine...

My ’87 is all stock and my ’79 is a lump. 1992 Camaro 305 with fuel injection and 700-R4 transmission. Love them both. They both have about 200 HP but the 4-speed automatic in the ‘79 makes all the difference in the world.

I have gotten both positive and negative reactions. I generally don't mention the V8 and they are so busy looking at the interior and exterior they don’t ask.

The terms "Lumpers" and "Splitters" are meant to distinguish two ways of thinking about concepts. I don't think their ordinary usage fits the circumstance we face in the existential problem of whether to replace one engine with another in a vintage car. Every time someone tells me that I need to bite the bullet and replace the whole motor of my '76 XJ6C with a Chevy block, I face this dilemma head on. How I react has nothing to do with lumping or splitting, it has more to do with things like "loyalty", "practicality", "integrity" etc. etc. I've limped along in this struggle for over forty years now. The most recent crisis ( car stalls in the middle of a bridge at rush hour) has been addressed by the brilliance of an aged ( even by my standards) Italian mechanic. He was able to readjust the Zenith Carbs and rejuvenate the automatic choke...a task at which many a trained mechanic has failed. So I keep the old beast....nothing to do with lumping or splitting.

 

If the thng runs OK, why swap in another engine?
Had my DOHc not had a catastrohic end, I would be driving it today.

I did a lot of reearch and contmplationas to fix or replace.

replace witha 94 Cadillac engine and transmission won out...

Like I have said before, I bought mine in 05 with every intention of swapping Chevy in immediately but was Impressed with jag power, so it stayed that way until last year, low oil pressure woes kept me close to home, but I want to make long trips in my car, so when the time came, went back to my original plan and swapped in the lt1! I have no regrets, I loved my car then, love it now! Lumper isn’t a derogatory term at all, I think I read it on here somewhere lump stood for less upkeep more power!!!

 

@Darrenmb: What kind of mileage are you getting with your car now?
I drove my XJ6 to North Carolina and got about 340 miles with full tanks and that was "Hauling A..". Two people and a trunk full of stuff. Filled tanks, left Melbourne and topped of my tanks somewhere in South Carolina, (19 gallons). So I figured about 15-16 mpg driving most of the time around 80-85 mph, sometimes more. The only thing I missed was my Cruise Control and I plan to take care of that in the near future.
PS: I am running my cars with non ethanol fuel. Costs a little more but I am happy with it.

 

Last check I was getting about 21 mpg, if I baby it, (but i seldom do)but my shift points are much higher then normal to keep engine in it’s power band,
I feel your pain on gas prices, my tune requires 93 octane!

 

I do have a few other tunes that I can swap into the pcm if I want to get kore mileage and use 89 gas, but for now im enjoying it a little too much to worry about a few extra bucks at each (more frequently fill up.

 

My reason for using Ethanol free fuel in my Jags are simple. I had some regular fuel w/ethanol in a container for my lawn mower. Two months later I went to fill my mower and the fuel had some water in it. I was told that that was normal for fuel with ethanol if left sitting for a while. Don't want that in my Jaguar tanks. Sometimes I may go 2 -3 months before I take my Jags for a drive.
As for fuel consumption, If I drive normally, I may get better fuel mileage.

 

I bought The Mistress so equipped, because I’m 71 and although I’m pretty handy in maintenance, Jaguars of this age leave most local mechanics stumped here on the coast of Maine.
But I open up the hood at a garage or walk into a parts store for Chevy 350 parts and it’s easy. I’ve had both a 12C and a tastefully modified 6C, but for this one I made an easy choice.

 

Beautiful car! The stance, wheels, and tires combine to make the look I hope to achieve.

Doug: If L.U.M.P means Low Upkeep More Power I don't think that any Jaguar to Jaguar swap would count. However, if L.U.M.P means something else; welcome to the club.
BTW: I am extremely happy with my LUMPS. They are both quiet and no one knows unless I pop the hood, which I pretty much never do when I am away from home.

 

Doug, your car is modified in a way that makes it way more cool and more powerful which is a common definition of a hot rod. But you have made your Jaguar even more Jaguar. Do you ever get a negative reaction from strangers?

I have never heard anyone who has a converted car that was anything but thrilled with the results. But we have all gotten negative reactions.
