Default Interior components

My other car is a 1966 Volvo 122S Amazon. There's a place in Sweden called VP Autoparts who do first class door cards, carpet sets, dash pads etc. Earlier in the summer I bought a 1971 XJ6 with a nice body and horrible interior (reminds me of my first girlfriend but that's another story).

I found a nice set of second-hand leather seats from a '77, but now I'm on the hunt for door cards, windlace (those padded/clothed strips above the doors), etc. Is there an outfit that is recommended for repro interior components?

Thanks,

I have bought two kits of the door trim from JagBits... I have had my door cards made up locally since they are special design.

Thanks. Exactly what I was looking for. Upon closer inspection, I can simply re-cover the windlace with headliner cloth, and spray glue the same cloth to headliner foam.

These guys sell the windlace, aka "furflex" on Ebay. Shipping is around £25.00. Haven't ordered from them.

On the Series 1 XJ, you should start the furflex install from the rear doors on the most rear bottom piece.... that way you end up with enough to finish a side with a little extra...

Default Type of leather used for seats

Does anyone know what type of leather was used for XJC/series II seats?

I'm shopping around to have all three seats recovered and it may be more cost effective to have a local guy replicate the old seats instead of buying readymade covers. I am shopping for hide prices but not sure what is best type...anyone know?

What I was looking for was whether there is a particular leather type that was used so I can replicate...

I see,

contrary to the Italians who use the thinner belly leather in their seat coverings, the Jaguar leather is from the back and sides, almost 1/8" thick. (almost, maybe 3/16").

Remember that the only leather used in Jaguar seats is on the top of the seat, the front of the seat Back, the headrest, and the center console in the older Saloons. In modern Saloons the Center console was a mix of both.

The sides and backs of seats is Vinyl. So are the door panels, kick panels, etc.

In the 70s Jaguar might still have been using Connolly "Vaumol" leather....but I think the Series I cars were the last to use it. Not sure; I'm no authority. I think Vaumol is a process, not a type of leather, per se.

Google Vaumol; lots of info out there

Cheers

In addition to the question of "type" of leather, I want to know the original application of the two different styles of "pleats". I have two '77 XJ6Cs that need new leather, but one has the wide smooth pleats and the other has the narrow embossed pleats. I doubt either one of mine is original at this point, but I want to go back to with correct style if I can determine what that is.

The seat cover suppliers specifically ask which type of seat you have if you are shopping for replacements. I suspect you could chose at the dealership which seat colour and leather type (perf or not) and pleat width. Based on that I would assume it becomes which of those combinations you prefer...I like thin pleats, perforated...

The wide-pleat seats were used in the V12 versions of the Series II and the narrow-pleat perforated leather in the 6 cylinder versions (this was also the leather used in the Series III XJ6). The leather was not Vaumol - that was for the earlier 60's cars such as the Mk 2. Jaguar never specified the particular name of the leather in the Series II cars (except that it was by Connolly).

The Series III (and likely Series II) Daimlers and Daimler-based VDP cars used the Connolly Autolux leather, their best leather. It was smooth or lightly embossed, but not perforated. The perforations hid some minor anomalies in the leather surface whereas the finish of the Autolux leather had to be and was absolutely perfect. The photo below shows the full Autolux interior of a 1992 V12 Vanden Plas (Series III).

I found very reasonably priced furflex from Terry's Jaguar. Jag Bits wants $100 more for a complete car set.

In modern Saloons the Center console was a mix of both. The sides and backs of seats is Vinyl. So are the door panels, kick panels, etc. For rest of world Vanden Plas Series 3's (I can't vouch for North American VDP's) the entire interior was draped in Autolux leather.
The only vinyl was on the door cappings because of weathering concerns.

Cheers,

Nigel

same thing Gregory. An oxymoron by any definition or interpretation of oxymoron you might want to attach to it.

Jaguar called it Conolly because Conolly called it Conolly.

what about Ambla? Jaguar called it Ambla because?

Nigel yes, only the tops of seats are leather, the rest is Ambla.

However, in older Jags, and in XJ-S 12 cfylinder, the center console and seat mechanism cappings are stitched leather.

example; the center console of my 1965 S type is covered in leather The center console of a 1986 V12 Coupe is also covered in leather. But the center console of my 1984 XJ-6 is covered in Ambla.
