I'm running one of his starters and actually going to be in Cookeville on the 24th and 25th. I think I'm going to drop by and check out his shop.

 

I think they look nice don't you. Not crazy pimp like but sporty. My hope is to have 3 set of rims.

Kents, the ones on there now and another sporty set.

Tray tables? I saw a xj6 with them once. Were they an after market option?

 

No, not aftermarket. Many Jags have had 'em over the years. Never on the Ser IIIs, though.

Oh my, what a beautiful car ! Hope you have many more years driving it. The XJ style of 1968 was never really improved upon except your Series 3 which was a slight restyle by Pininfarina of Italy, (Sir William Lyons didn't do it because he had retired by then, but he approved it).

My X350 is a lovely car and I like the style because it is so "retro" and similar to the Sir William Lyons cars, but yours is an original.

Its funny even though this car is in good shape I have to fix the suspension this year as the original rubber is deteriorating. The A/C will need charged again as the system seems to have a small leak somewhere. I am looking forward to doing the suspension work, I just wish someone lived close to me to look over my shoulder.

 

Unfortunately the rubber parts of the suspension start to deteriorate as soon as the car leaves the factory. Now as they don't get much (if any) direct sunlight on them, they can last a long time, whereas tyres and other rubber parts exposed to sun and the UV light in it deteriorate faster.

As for rubber parts, there are the front lower wishbone inner bushes, the anti-roll bar bushes (sway bar), and the rear subframe mounts. The upper front wishbone inners are "Slipflex", but still part-rubber. I would not think you need to do this lot all at once. The front lowers last a very long time, the roll bar bushes not very long in my experience, and the cup washers that clamp the rubbers also seem to not last long either.

However all the parts are available and reasonable in price, and DIY jobs, except for the inner lowers, which need the front springs to come out and you really MUST use the correct special tool for this to compress them properly.

 

Well took her out today just for a spin. The right front sounds like a pinball bumper I am almost positive its the rubber around the front shock. Looks like I can unscrew it from inside the engine compartment. If someone has done this could you chime in please. I also need to get a manual for this car as I have none.

 

There are two possible causes of this noise

(1) the shock absorber top bushes inside/outside the wing has gone - you can just replace these, its an easy job, but do both sides while you're at it.

(2) the anti-roll bar link bushes have gone and the cupped washers holding them have corroded or worn away - they get quite a loading on them in normal use. Again an easy job to do, and again, check both sides.

 

A very nice example of the marque and it looks like it has been well looked after.

From a safety point of view, I would replace the 'original'? Pirellis even if they are not 'terribly cracked'.

This might also give you a more flexible ride.

 

Beautiful car. I'm new to the forum - this is my first post. Was just browsing and saw these pics - I'm looking for something similar. I've been looking on Ebay just to see whats out there. I saw a beautiful Jag once in Baltimore that had a grill similar to yours - it looked "concave" sort of, but all the XJ6' I've seen on Ebay have grills that look convex; Its not as important as mechanical considerations, but it does make a big difference to me in the car's appearance. Was just wondering if there was a model year where the grill configuration changed. Thanks.

 

Updated Rims - Now 17,300 Miles. BMW 5 series pulled along side of me the other day when I had the Jag out and wanted to race me. LOL, I was like dream on, I am ridding in style.

 

A fabulous find ! My vote, if I had one, which I do not, is change nothing, including the rub strips. Not the bvest idea, but the removal might maike matters worse.

Agree, top shock bushings. I found a blister pack in my bits from a long gone Ford were just right.

Fix but don't change unless the change is the only viable choice.

Just my ideas.

 

Thanks for the vote! I Forgot to mention, I was able to find 5 kents ( original Rims )since I posted a while back to put the original tires back on those. The bouncing sound was the shock bushing which I repaced and the car is back to riding well now.

 

Brett, those wheels look interesting. Ive recently acquired a 88 VDP, black exterior and am pondering if i should just refinish my 15" peperpots or get new wheels. Can you tell me if those are 16 or 17" and what model Jag they came from? Any fitment issues?

Those wheels look like the FJ40 wheels on NIX. Elinor has chronicled her problems with them. Caveat.


That car came with Kent alloys. So, are the Pirelli's on it original, or put on with the later wheels at a later date.


Too bad, you are almost all the way across this great land from me. I have a set of Kents, not pristine, but decent. Some detailing would get them up to the standards for that gorgeous machine. The "price" would be very right!!!


Is the spare a Kent, and with the 205 tire so as to fit properly. I kept a Kent, even if with the 215 it stands a bit proud of the well.


A wider lattice as is now on my car would stand a lot proud!!
Although the rub strips are functional, many, including me think they don't look right. Just more bucks for the selling dealer???


David is a lot closer to you and might have the wheels you want. He is a reasonable guy perhaps his now known weakness for lawn mowers might be the key.


An odd thing. For one reason or another my son gahered up about 4 riding mowers.
None ran, now they do and some even look good!!!


Kind of lost interest when an ancientCase Tractor came aboard.

Oh, the mats. Suppose jaguar didn't want them to jam the throttle and get folks in big trouble. Toyota missed that point much later.


If my car had them, which it never did as it is a base car, not VDP, And, I coluld anchor the one in the driver's foot well, I'd remove my foogeat and drive in my socks or even barefoot!!!


OTH, I'm a Texan and we don't cotton to sheep.

They are an older set of 17" wheels that the driven man used to carry. They no longer make them. I don't like the newer ones they have now the same way. Here is the car now it has 18,000 on it and the side molding removed. I feel its a night and day difference, what do u think? Original body line now stands out. In the meantime I also picked up a set of 5 Kents for the car and yes I have the original pirelli's that came with the car.
