I have come to the conclusion that no two XJ6s are the same. So a little tweaking might be required but spacer washers should get it lined up.

Bill, when I was endlessly fiddling with the design I thought about a notch or detent to get it to work without a knob. I wanted to not go wider than 3/4" for the material, if there was a detent I felt it would weaken the piece. Also, I wanted to keep it as simple as possible both to minimize manufacturing costs as well as to make it so it didn't require tight tolerances.

I highly encourage people to modify the design as you see fit and then build a prototype and test it. If it works out well be sure to post the results on the Forum with photos so we can all benefit from it.

See attached for future "Locking Stay Concept" for extended maintenance periods (1/4 bolt or pin). I agree with Jeff that the current materiel is too thin to modify, the feature would have to be designed in. Also note forward link alignment issue, covered with longer bolt and extra plain Nut. This will prevent the bolt rocking in the bonnet bracket.

an engineer friend in Tennessee did special Hood / Bonnet hinges for his MK-2, so I bet the concept can be applied to the bootlid hinges,
if you can figure out what he did !! HINT: it's a "pantograph" hinge.

Oh, I Like that!!
I'm SO tired of banging my head on the trunk lid, which no longer stays up anyway, so I have to prop it open with a broom stick.

Just this weekend I got my XJ^C back on the road and tried to put two golf bags in the trunk (mine and Barb's) with great difficulty. It would have been much easier with a lid that would open further. I guess I'm trying to make the perfect car! Maybe that's too big an ask! We sure did arrive in style though!!! The Starter drooled all over the car!

you'll need a two-step hinge to do that, in other words, a hinge over the hinge. That's what my crystal ball said.

I don't have the answer to make it open wider but I developed a solution to keep it open as wide as it goes. A gas strut with the lower end mounted on a piece of angle iron and the top end on a steel strap bolted under the hinge. Total cost about $20. Open the trunk and the lid stays open and then closes easily. The part you need is here: Gas strut link

Looks like what's preventing my OEM trunk lid from opening any further is the two OEM springs are fully compressed?

Elinor took a look at what was involved in replacing the trunk springs (as I have a Derelict under the trees out back) and opted for the Broom Stick.

Although I DO like Jeff's gas strut attachment, except that it blocks such a big area on the side where I like to put things in over the beam.

That scissor hinge though, I'd part with good money for a pair of those, and lay the car up for an Entire Winter to make it work.

It appears that with the further opening of the lid, the center of gravity the Lid will move forward about 15". This may be enough to let the old springs do their job ???

David I have not attempted to modify the trunk lid hinges.

I think the secret could be found in the scissor hinges for the rear seat center armrest, they do a two-step movement when you pull the armrest out.

I have a spare armrest from a 1964 S type which is identical to the XJ, I will get pictures.

New and Improved XJ6 Bonnet Stay ... program update

17 units have been requested, 16 units shipped and 3 units remain available ..from the initial batch of 20 sets.

Thank you all for your support and helpful feed-back. This has helped others install their units, where minor tweaking was required for fit or alignment.

I will list balance of Stays on E-bay Monday. Will honor any request this weekend from Forum members.

Let's all give Jeff a round of applause, I think even William Lyons would have approved.

Best Regards
David

PS: Bill, Jose and Elinor, have mentioned an interest in having a greater boot/trunk opening angle??? I will start a new thread on a "concept for combination bracket/hinge" for ~50% greater opening position, without broom handle.
