Default New owner, 87 XJ6

Just picked her up. 87 XJ6, 79k miles, bought it from the original owner, a little old British lady. She's in mint condition, been garaged her whole life and looks it. Has a few minor age-related things to take care of, but man is she pretty. Zero rust, mint interior, couldn't ask for a nicer one. This is my first Jag, coming from BMW/Mercedes, and she'll be the play/weekend car for me. I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions as I start to familiarize myself with this old girl. I'll see if I can get some better pics later.

Welcome aboard.

The Ser IIIs are fantastic cars. The most modern of all antique automobiles.

Cheers

Oh, what a lovely car !! Same colour as I had once. Looks like a peach, and IS a peach from what you say in your post. Carry on with the TLC and you'll love it.

I'll address the wheels once I get some of the rubber bits replaced. Want to move up to a 16" wheel, and would like to get a classic BBS mesh style. Think it would look good on this car.

Good for you! What a find. My personal taste would have me keep the original wheels though - maybe get them refurbished.

That style DOES look great on a Ser III :-)

It's tough to find an aftermarket wheel that doesn't ruin the classic style. I forget the journalist, but someone likened an XJ6 on modern wheels to Margaret Thatcher in a pair of sneakers!

That said, I have seen a black SIII, slightly lowered, but some chunky 5 spoke wheels on fat rubber, that was well-executed. Will have to see if I can dig up some pics.

Are you planning on tinting the windows?

Me, I'd go for refurbshed pepper-pot wheels, (if you can find them). Made for the car as an optional extra and look good, plus are easy to clean.

Not in a huge rush as it's garaged, only driven sparingly, and we don't get a lot of sun up here in Seattle, but think I will eventually put some very mild tint on it just to protect the interior as it's mint right now.

Default Teardrops are falling on my head...

XJ-40 Teardrop wheels for me, they look "Jaguar", not "Volvo". But never mind opinions, it's your car, you can put Well Fargo stagecoach wheels if you prefer :-))

Hello and welcome,

I just purchased an 87 Ivory white with camel interior exact car to yours. Aren't they beautiful. Yours looks really nice. Isn't it fun to find an old car that had been well cared for. This is my first Jag and i've always preferred the series 3. This one is cosmetically very nice but purchased "not running" most likely ignition related. still working on the car. looking forward to getting it on the road.

Enjoy the Road, Jaguar forum provides extensive information on these cars.

the interior looks like new, now you need a 15½" diameter steering wheel to get rid of that 17" School Bus steering wheel.

That momo steering wheel is an interesting idea. I have seen a better looking Soverign steering wheel on some series III cars that looks pretty good as well. Does anyone know if this Soverign wheel is less than 17 inches?

ps. I liked the original series III wheels as well but it's getting hard to find decent 15" rubber so I upgraded to 16 inch. For now, there's lots of rubber to choose from in 16" and I didn't notice a difference in the ride from 15" to 16" on my car. I went with some XJ40 wheels I found and they fit fine with no rubbing in the stock XJ40 tire size.

the sovereign steering wheel is probably 16½" if not 17". Jaguar has been using huge steering wheels since the 1930's, supposedly for easier steering. The SS Jaguar from the 1930's has a 19" steering wheel. It's like steering with an extra large Pizza.
