Hi all,

I am tudstuen's son and I have helped a bit on this car.

So far we have covered most, if not all, possible routes for why this car ran, intermittently ran, and now has not started for a while.

In a simple summary, the car has adequate spark, adequate fuel pressure, and all systems seem to be "go" outside of it not starting.

The fuel pressure is normal and is being delivered to the end of the fuel rail. The injector plugs are getting power based on the noid light testing. The problem lies in the fact that the injectors are not moving the fuel into the engine.

I am certainly stumped on this. I can see what is meant by crossing the wires on the Cut-Off Switch. That's something simple.

I am just amazed that we have tons of new parts, and tons of replacement (but known working) parts and it hasn't started. I believe we have covered all the possible and common problems to this point.

It's such a nice looking car, and I'd much rather fix it at the house than have to drag it to the recommended Jaguar old-timer that was recommended to us.

Pull the spark plugs and dribble some fuel ...a teaspoon full or so .....into each cylinder. Try starting the engine. Report back if it runs for a moment or two.

Cheers

hi,
do you have mobile mechanics in your area? some of these mechanics are experienced and for a nominal amount they can at least eliminate certain issues. I've used them in the past to get brake jobs, remove stubborn parts, etc. Check your local Craigslist under Services, call them and talk to a few who work on European cars.

Is there a combustion chamber pressure test anywhere on this thread ?

Sometimes with car a long time the rings get stuck and little pressure is generated on the compression stroke. If fuel is there, spark is there at the plug at the right time, it has to run, all other things being equal. Does a squirt of Easy Start do anything ?

according to the owner, the engine was running, but slowly becoming more difficult to start, so it wasn't standing a long time, it's been 3 weeks since this started. He tried staring fluid and the engine tries to start but dies, the injectors are not working.

Well, if adding fuel directly to the cylinders makes it almost start.....closer to starting than before....then I'd pull the fuel rail with the injectors attached and see if they actually squirt fuel. It sounds like they are not doing so.

the curious thing is that all 6 injectors appear to not be working, and that tells me that something is stopping them from doing so.

Curious indeed. It would be very odd for 6 injectors to fail. The problem almost certainly remains upstream as you say but at this point I'd want to visually verify if they are or are not squirting.

This is a real head scratcher!

Cheers

I was at the Jaguar dealer today and I spoke to one of the mechanics I know there. I spoke to him about your problem. I mentioned that you replaced the ECU. He said that it was the fuel control unit. (What's in a name) Which one did you put in? These are the numbers you should see on the computer for your car.
0 280 001 126.
Lucas 5 cu. Fuel Control Unit #73207B

Be shure it is not simply the hose connecting the mass air flow meter to the intake, any vacum leak here will give you fits.
Last time I looked you will need a feed to the cold start injector during cranking, think it might be that little green and white wire you mentioned,
should be three relays on the firewall ign, thermotime and start.

Check the feeds for ign and injector amp, the silver guy on the right hand fender close to the ign amp, (little black box hanging from the intake plenum

Default new question

before i took off the rail and injectors i checked again the resistance on each injector. only one would remain stable at 2.3. all others went crazy and had reading in the teens to zero.
i also found a broken wire in the boot of one of the injectors. ive read that if one is bad it shuts down the rest.. is that true. if the broken wire is fixed might that make it start..iis it safe to repair the wire or would i have to get a new wire boot.
