Nope and yes
Your neutral switch/reverse light switch needs adjusting most likely. Easy:
Adjusting Backup Lamp Switch, Series III XJ6
(Some of the switches were not made with a bolt hole that allows adjustment. Easy fix. Remove the switch and elongate the hole)

I should add that the above write up is for adjusting the switch for correct reverse light operation. The exact same principle applies when adjusting it to allowing starting in "P". It the same switch. Rather than finding the sweet spot in "R" you simply use the same procedure to find the sweet spot in "P"
