Chaffed wire.

I talking about a wire carrying "+" voltage that is shorting out. Could be anywhere along the line between the breakers and the motors.

But before you go on a wild goose chase let's clarify a few things and perhaps narrow it down

Which side isn't working?

If you use a fuse instead of a breaker will it blow instantly as soon as the key is turned on? Or only if you operate the switches?

Passengers' side (US auto); uses the flat relays. I have tested the motors - they work; windows currently up. I have tested the switches - exchanging them with the driver's side - they work. I have replaced the circuit breaker (round thing) with a brand new one.

As I have owned this XJ6 for 24 years and an 86 XJ6 for 15 years and about 20 XK-Es over time - I am acquainted with Lucas' wiring and the peccadilloes of them.

Now..... when I put the relay back in, all it does is click. Have wanted to put the driver's side in but fear it may blow and then..... I did go out and purchase a 30 amp Corvette relay - upon installing and turning the key - smoke in the cockpit - coming from the switches....

So........ Many thanks Chuck

Thank you for your thoughts - and I took the Master switch into consideration except the driver's side windows work; the passengers' does not. We will see.

First, let's get on the same page regarding nomenclature.

The window relay (singular) is round

The circuit breakers (two) are flat:

If clicking and smoke occur when you plug-in a circuit breaker...but without operating the window motors.... then you have a short circuit.

On the basis of "ya gotta start somewhere" I'd unplug all the switches and see if the clicking goes away. If it doesn't, then you have a problem upstream of the switches.

More later. I'm on my first cuppa coffee

Cheers

I had the same issue. Located the relay and it was dead. Checked at least 10 local auto parts shops and none could supply a replacement. In the end, I got a pack of 10 on Amazon. The relay is a standard generic 12V 30/40 Amp 5-Pin SPDT relay. See link below.

Black/ pink ground works.

But the double red/slate has no voltages key on/off. I also checked all four red/slates under the glove compartment going in and out of the (I guess 2 circuit breakers?).

The relays part connecting to red/slate, numbered 87, was also different color than the rest 86,85 etc., sort of like oxidized.

Any suggestions, I'm getting better at this with my new voltage meter lol.
Hi sir, my jaguar 1986,sovereign, used to be my uncles. And all the electrical and items were in buckets and I ve spent years fixing everything back.70% of it done. My issue is as mentioned above my black/pink wire which should be ground is always 12v. Can some one please explain what i might have screwed up. If I give that wire ground supply and the yellow ground lock out switch ground it works. I am hesitant to do that since I want it to be correct as it can lead to other issues.

Thank you in advance for your help

Assuming you have a left hand drive car the window relay is at the extreme right side of the dashboard, outboard of the glovebox.
A big thanks for this! I have a copy of the genuine/green workshop manual and page 86-11 states and shows that the window relay is on the LH side of the dash! There are a few relays there, but not the one for the windows. I thought I was going mad!

A faulty old Lucas relay was my issue. A new Panasonic piece has replaced it. Windows all work now!
