has anyone re roofed a xjc?

mine has a mirrored glass sunroof fitted and i have bought a second hand roof section with no holes in it. i am planning to swap the roof skins.

has anyone done this before? i thought the the skin would have been spot welded to the gutters but it seems to be electro welded

 

As far as I can tell the roof was mig or arch welded very poorly and the seams were metal finish with lead. The lead makes repairs difficult becuse its hard to expose the welds for drilling and your new welds will be contaminated. Ive done it... Took a long time to clean the metal. Ideas; Not by my experience, but by watching and reading of those that are experienced.

1. Cut only the portion of the roof that is violated by an after market device. Cut a matching section from another source, including a Jaguar roof.

2. Follow the route used by the custom guys in 'chopping a top. Make the cuts in the pillars of the donor and donee cars. Weld in at the pillars. Smaller seams, grind and fill. Filler OK here, thin nd a small area.

Any way you look at it, a formidable task...

I agree with Carl, might be worth attempting to fill the existing sunroof hole with sheet metal first to keep the structural integrity of the sail planes and windscreen posts. If that fails plan B would be replacing the entire roof - looking at how they made the Avon convertible XJCs to strengthen and keep the flimsy XJC bodies intact
