I used normal compressed air and an HVLP spray gun to apply the basecoat.
With the HVLP gun and the proper paint mixture you can apply the paint with very little fumes.
The reason being that you are using very low pressure, in my case I applied the basecoat at 23psi. At this pressure, 98% of the paint gets on the car and not in the air. Also, when using an HVLP gun, any fumes created go to the floor so you don't have a lot of overspray.
I used 2 fans. One on the ceiling for airflow with my garage door raised about 1 foot allowing fresh air to flow from the slightly opened garage door through a window i have at the rear of my garage.
The second fan is a 24 inch garage fan which I placed at floor level with my garage side door open. This fan extracts the air and fumes out of the garage onto a wet blanket which I hung on saw horses about 2 feet from the fan. The result was all of the fumes extracted from the garage got trapped in the wet blanket.
I also used a low VOC paint so there was very little smell of paint. I could not tell because I was wearing a proper mask but my neighbor told me he never smelt anything and would not have known that I had painted the car if I had not let him know beforehand that I was going to paint the car.
The clearcoat created a little more fumes as I had to increase the air pressure to 28psi to spray the car. See fans used in pics.
Two weeks to go before I buff and polish the car.

Hello. I think I will do the same as you and spray at home
Could you please tell me what low VOC paint you used. I have been reading on paints and everywhere I see to stay away from URETHANE. I will only have a cartridge based mask.
I was thinking of using a single stage paint (Acrylic Enamel) but I thnk the hardener has urethane in it !!
Anything you can let me know would be a certain help
Thanks
Chas
