I'm prepping to replace the head gasket in my XJ6, and I may need to do the rings as well.

Am I correct in my understanding that if I don't pull the engine I have to remove the entire front axel to do this?

 

I've never done it so don't take mine as the final word but I strongly suspect that the front subframe (which supports the engine and to which all the front suspension is bolted to) must come out to access the bottom of the engine for piston removal

Bleh. I was thinking I might just replace the rings while I had the head off, but if they're not bad I may not go to the extra trouble.
