Series 2 rough idle
Hi everyone.
I have recently bought a Series 2 XJ6 L 4.2 after looking for some time. It had been sitting a while as the owner passed away but I bought it as it's a rock solid example.
The idle was a little lumpy but I thought a service and a run may help, but now it's worse. I have replaced the old points with an accuspark module, new leads, rotor arm and cap but still the hunting remains. It's also backfired a couple of times. I've checked the firing order and the timing, (plug number 1, point the gun and it lines up with the mark on the pulley the previous owner left) cleaned the plugs, made sure the carb needles are clean but I just can't get the car to idle and run well. This week I'll replace the plugs and get a new coil (that looks fun to change!!!) but I can't help but think it's fuel related. I removed and replaced the fuel lines and filter, and when the ignition is on with a fuel pipe removed the fuel spurts out clean and smooth. (If that makes sense?) There is oil in the dashpots and the needles seem clean and smooth. If I didn't shave my head I'd be bald from tearing my hair out!! One thing I will say is it starts first turn of the key hot or cold but runs poorly. Usually my old cars are the other way round!!
Any pointers much appreciated.
