Series 2 XJ12 starter problem
Hi all,
just when I thought the resto of my Daimler 12 was going swimmingly I have run into problems with the starter motor or related wiring. For no apparent reason after working on the fuel injectors the starter would not proceed.
When the key is turned to the start position the fuel pump energises, the relay near the radiator clicks but nothing happens.
I fear the worst but can't imagine how a starter can work perfectly and then fail. Perhaps in removing the fuel rail I have dislodged some wiring but I can't imagine what.
What lockouts are present that would allow the fuel pump etc to work but not power up the starter?
What is a logical sequence to follow to eliminate other issues before tearing into the starter removal?
Just how horrid is the starter motor removal?
I must confess to be totally defeated by some of the manifold studs both to the head and also between the manifold and the exhaust pipe. I have a good collection of tools but my dam hands and wrists just seem too big and inflexible. Am I doing something wrong?
How many hours would an amateur mechanic take to remove the unit ( a very open ended question I know)?
Anyway any suggestions on either diagnoses of my problems or advise for the removal of the starter greatly appreciated.
These things are sent to try us.
regards
Al

Alan,
Our 1976 V12 had hissy issues with the same.
The starter relay in the large one on the bulkhead, adjacent to the bolt that secures the cross braces.
Among other things attached, is a LARGE White wire with a RED stripe.
This travels to the starter solenoid and ignites things.
Near the dipstick for the transmission is a JOINER, (British common sense), in the form of a male/female spade with a rubberish cover. They seperate when fiddling back there.
The relay itself can cometimes CLICK, and nothing happen, so dirty contacts inside, not common.
The neutral start switch at the gearlever is having a moment, so move the lever the "N", and try that. Sometimes that works.
Find a suitable socket (I forget the size, but 1" is bouncing in the head), and rotate the engine about 1mm CLOCKWISE. That works for ours for some strange reason, and that bar and socket is in the boot. Cleaned the boot out, forgot to put the bar back, next day, no stater activation, reached for the bar, OOPS. With it in the boot, the beast behaves, has to be a Female V12 for sure.
Starter removal on a RHD, oh dear, subframe dropped, and then do battle. Engine out is easier. BUT., that Lucas starter gives very little trouble in the real world from all I have had. It is generally a relay/wiring etc etc.
