Has anyone else experience difficulty removing the speedometer in a series 3 xj6, mine is a 1982. I read you should be able to push in and rotate the instrument. My is being very difficult to remove. I can feel the spring as I push in on the left side. I was able to rotate it about 80 degrees but it took me awhile and some work. If its this rough should I just not mess with it?

I have done this many times on S2 and S3 cars.

Push in firmly, not so much as to crack the glass, and rotate.

It only rotates a small amount.

Some I have sprayed some "Silicone Spray" using the small tube inserted in the nozzle, around the circumference of the instrument, and out it pops.

I reckon it only rotates about 30deg, but honestly I have never measured it.

I simply do NOT remember, Clockwise, or Anti-Clockwise, so someone will sort that little lapse I feel sure.

The 80deg sounds like it has gone "past" the cutouts, and it still firmly attached.

I push evenly on the outer ring with my hand... do be careful applying a lot of force as you may have small hands and may not cover a
very large area... pushing on only one side at a time is not the way.

Since they fit so tight in some cars, I just reach underneath the dash and help turn it the bottom with my fingers or sometimes a wooden
dowel. Just be careful where you apply the "tool", fingers are better.

Had mine out for new LED light bulbs in the past week... push in, turn CCW you can see the cutout when you get close... use a light to help
find the removal spots... next time it will be much easier. Clean out the tracks and using silicone is OK.

Be sure to note the ground strap attached or you will not have lights until you put it/them back on (another on the Tach).

I needed my son's strong fingers to get mine out. But, that was the tach. Same principle, though.

Watched an old show of "Fast and Loud". the Gas Monkeys (PC version of grease monkeys", working on a vintage RR. Too many beers and head monkey Richartd Rawlins bought a semi vintage RR at auction. Mater mechanic Aaron Kaufman perplexed at LH threads on one side and RH's on the other of the lug nuts.


Myth to be busted!!
