Default Thinking about buying an XJ6

I noticed a fair looking maroon XJ6 at a local lot the other day and stopped to look at it.The body is good with some paint chipping, interior is good with new cloth upholstery on the seats.

I found the engine and transmission have been replaced with a Chevrolet 350 motor and transmission.
The dealer said it was his neighbors car that had the work done but never drove it.
It started and ran good, sounded good with no smoke.

He is asking $2500, is that a fair price?

Odd, but not unheard of, cloth seats, not vinyl and leather ! What series and/or year ?

1. Sagging head liner?
2. Unsafe over age tires?
3. Bad IRS calipers?
4. Rust,
5. Old tech SBC and 350? Car, not FI? Neat ands clean install or butchery or some where between.
5. Clunks and wander on drive?
6. Windows go up and down?
7. Instruments including tach and speedo functional.
8. Cranks only in N or D?

If all or most of these exist, pass

If none or just a few, mebbe.

If the asking price is $2500, I suspect $2000 would buy.

It is a 75 XJ6
Old school 350 with 4bbl carb large intake.
It does have electronic ignition.
The Engine appeared clean and looked to be installed correctly with no shortcuts.
AC works,
gauges work except oil pressure be said it was working the last time it was driven, and it definitely had oil pressure.
windows go up and down but are slow.
Seats are cloth and fairly recently upholstered.
only rust I saw was surface rust where the paint was chipped or deep scratched (it will need a paint job)
Tires were fair
aftermarket aluminum wheels.

Not a bad deal. But, the wheels my or may not fit correctly. Poor spacers are a danger.
And, fair tires.

These are safety items that are hugely important, and can cost a bit to fix.

As to OP, yeah, the lifters would clatter awful if it was low. The Jaguar sensor has failed. They are prone to do that.

From afar, I'd say 2K.

But, f you like the car, that is really important. That covers a lot of "sins"!!

Yea I'd pay particular attention to how thin the rear brake discs are, they are a massive pain to replace, expensive and or a lot of work for you.

Check the foot well floor pans, I didn't and there was a lot of surface rust when I eventually did.

Actually the boot is a good place to look for rust too, my car had a fuel leak and had a hole in the boot by the fuel pumps.

Carls list sound a lot like my car when I bought it :-)

All good suggestions so far. XJ6s are famous (infamous?) for rust around the front and rear window openings. Check the bottom corners of the windscreen especially. Look for bubbling and push the rubber gently back with you finger to see if it looks corroded.
