Transmission Adaptability
Hi Gang,
I'm selling one of my project cars which is a 1973 Series One XJ6
The guy interested in buying it only wants it for the motor & transmission because he wants to put that drive train into an MK2.
The question is, what are the exact dimensions of the automatic transmission from a 73 series one and will it bolt right into an MK2?
The guy doesn't want to open up the transmission tunnel or have to go through any cray mods to make it all fit.
So......will the drive train from an XJ6 bolt right into an MK2, or would there be complications?
Please let me know as this guy is waiting for me to answer this question, thanks....

If the MK2 owner hasn't done his own homework, then it sounds as if the proposed project is doomed to fail.
It is presumed the Mk2 was originally an automatic. If it was a manual then there is no way it would fit. The manual gearbox tunnel is much smaller.
The engine mount system is different however the 4.2 block will fit if the original Mk2 mounts are available.
The pulleys are different. There is limited space at the front of the engine.
The XJ6 oil filter will not fit. An oil filter and housing off a MK1, MK2, early S type and 420 will be needed.
And so on and on. Not impossible but it is not a simple swap.

What Bill said plus the mount under the gearbox tail and the position of the gearbox output flange (length of the gear box). It seems unlikely that they will line up, which would mean fabrication of a mounting bracket and supports and modification (lengthening?) of the prop shaft. It might be all OK, but needs to be checked. Some surgery will be required to accommodate the gear shift mechanism. There is or was a company called John's Cars in the US who supplied kits for transmission and engine swaps. It would be worthwhile to look up their website and speak with them.
Everything is possible, but usually harder than it first appears and most often the devil is in the detail.

If he is looking for bolt in, it's not going to happen. The engine bay space is tight in a Mark 2, there are so many small details that can derail the project if he's not willing or able to fabricate or do a lot of research on various parts that were used in different Jaguars over the years.
