Default Vacuum Tank

Vacuum tank is bust and the vacuum has escaped. Where to they hide when they get out? Where do I get new vacuum to fill the tank?
Always wanted to ask that.
This battered tank is broken. I assume they are factory-sealed drained of all air and closed with some kind of no-return valve to prevent air getting in or some such.
They are pretty robust and sturdy. The nozzle is broken off this one and I can hear bits falling around inside.
Will need a new one to get the series of little puff-thingee working again for the heater and air flow.
Are the distances and tube lengths important in the end effect of the vacuum system working? Or does the pressure determine everything and tube distance doesn't effect the pressure to open and shut flaps?

Within the confines of what a sensible man might conjure up tube lengths are not critical, in my experience.

So then all I shall need is a sensible man and tubes of any given length

Hi,
On the Series 3's the vac reservoir is only a holding tank designed to "keep as adjusted" the climate system settings when parked. The air gets sucked out of the tank by manifold vacuum through a one way valve when the engine is running. When stopped the valve shuts keeping a vacuum on the tank and the connected climate control system. I think most systems by now will have small leaks so the cycle repeats on the next startup / drive. I think the tank may also be there to keep the climate system operating correctly if the driver is using full throttle ( which reduces manifold vacuum / gives no vacuum ).

Cheers,
Brian

Can't believe the state of that tank. It has had a cruel life. Normally sits in a well protected spot, I would have thought.

NLA new I believe, only available on second-hand market.

Make sure you find one that hasn't filled with coolant via a faulty water heater valve, and hence rusted up inside, like mine had.

I think the original number was CAC2526 which is indeed NLA. If a good used one isn't readily available I suspect a tank from some other car might be adapted without too much trouble.

If you're careful you can braze a new tube where the old one is broken off. Mine isn't anything like air-tight anyway and hasn't been for some time.

Little bits rattling around shouldn't be a problem as they'll settle to the bottom and stay there.

all Jags do or did, and they all look like WW2 German helmets. The one in my 1965 S type is big enough to wear as a helmet.

If you have a vacum guage, you can rig some plumbing. and a source such as the engine to pull a vacum. observe any leak down

Or get a new toy, a Mitty VAc. Hand pump and guage. Pull the vac,. wait and see if it holds. Use about 15 PSI.

If no braze tools, solder can do it.

Aye, mine leaks/ At one time, my AC worked, sorta. cooling fie, stomp loud pedal, AC goes off, hot air comes in.

It is a resevoir. but for vacum not liquid or pressure.

just get a good used one from David. XJ-S tanks are similar.
