Hi I have June 1974 build SWB XJ6 sage colour delivered September 1974
the Jaguar has done 25,978km (1st time)
I bought it from a deceased estate where it had been in covered in storage since 1992
I bought it in September 2014 & have had in my garage since buying it & slowly getting it almost brand new again
this year I got the Jaguar registered & set about getting it polished ready for car show etc
but when washing The jag on a cool day & the sun comes out for a short time while washing it, on returning it to the garage
for drying white spots appear on the surface of the paint & wont wipe off with a damp cloth.

A friend uncle who is a spray painter said the clear coat could be failing.

question did Jaguar clear coat paintwork in the early 70s

and what do the expert here think it maybe before a start cut & polishing & protective coating, if I can get rid of the white spots

Clear-over-base paint (COB), was not is use at Jaguar in the 70s, but if the car has been resprayed in the 90s or later, then COB would likely have been used.
How hard is the water where you are ? Also are you rinsing, then leathering off the water after washing ?

hard water? In my cllege days, 47-52, I wrked at a full service gas station. Washing cars was oe of the things I did. no detergent then. just water. It was mineralized in that part of the country. AKa hard water vs soft water. We used a chamois to wipe. Careful to keep the car wet at all times. Then wipe down with a better chamois. if we let it dry, the white spots appeared. hard to get rid of.

Now, i live in a soft water area. I either blow dry or wipe down with a towel after i wash.

In ech case, not wash in sunlight.
