The latest issue (September-October) of Jaguar Journal arrived in the mail today (not online yet that I can find), and at first I was Delighted to find a 2-page spread, pages 28, 29, relating how an Xj6C was, um, Converted, to a state-of-the-art Corvette drive train; the first installment only, entitled:
"FAMILY DONOR HEART TRANSPLANT" "When a Lump is not a Lump"
And then I read the article.
Apparently it's not a Lump (which I find a rude and derogatory term) when the car in question has won Numerous awards and trophies in sanctioned JCNA events, is owned by a JCNA member of some repute and juice, and when he decided to lump it also has resources to hire the work done Professionally, no expense spared. Oh. And it's RED!

For the mere Commoners among us who Dare to "Lump" our beloved cars rather than watch them crushed because they fail Emissions, MOT, Whatever, or just because we want to, Scurrilous remarks (contemptuous invectives) such as Ba****d, Mongrel, Feral, and Defiled are likely to continue. Wow. I can't wait to read that article. This is such an emotional issue for the Jaguar community. I own two Series IIIs, a pristine, restored example in a very attractive color combination. The other one is a very nice, tastefully done "lump" with modifications like very comfortable modern seats that match the rest of the upholstery.
Soon I will be at the point where one of them will have to go due to lack of space. Just this past weekend I was telling my wife my justification for which one I plan to sell. (Please note that I am a male so this is written from a male perspective). I told her they are like two very pretty girls. But one of them also has a sparkling personality. Which one am I going to choose?
I am proud that my 1984 is the last unmolested XJ-6.
Hell it even has the same changeover solenoid it has had since I bought the car!
yes I had to replace the fuel pump last year, so sue me!
It needs a respray though, the original factory paint is shot. One day, when I have dinero.
Just respray it the same color and you'll be good. :-) Perhaps try to find out the exact brand of paint used at the factory and have the body shop get the same formula or at least as similar as possible.
The only lumps I find acceptable are in-house ones. Like the gentleman here who swapped the 4.2 in his SIII XJ for a V12.
It seems, at least to me, that the folks that were venomous as to "lumps" have left or merely got quiet. The ones that choose not to lump are quite civil to those of us that have "lumps" In my mind a good thing.
Actually, I seem to recall that the "lump" word was more generic before it was applied to Jaguars.
It meant the engine, of any specie. In that context, the original XK engine is the lump. Just as much as any V8 that is installed for whatever reason, or even a lack of a reason.

I liked my 83 as a 6. I bought it and drove it that way for a time. It ran well. Til that fateful day in Stockton .
Well, in my shop at last. diagnosis in progress. Cranks nicely. Too durn nicely!!!! got out my compression guage. Easy on that engine. Zero in all holes. That ain't good!!!!
Did a lot of research as to fix or replace. $'s loosely compared. Made the choice. It wasn't cheap.
Sure did learn a lot.. I wrote a "white paper". Unfortunately lost in space..
Jose's car is in Thermoplastic Grosvenor brown as is mine. Not one of jaguar's best ideas. but, mine as worn well, sans the craze found in many. needing of a wash and polish. but, it has to wait. I'm on "light duty". recovering from cataract surgery on my left eye... See a h...o f a lot better !!!!
There are "polishes" for scatched paint. Puts pigment in the scratch. Concours, no way. bur shiny, oh yeah...

Very true. I wasn't clear about that except for the chronological order of my report stating how it won all the trophies AND THEN the owner decided to Transplant the Corvette into it.

i got my 78 XJS only because it had a 12 cylinder engine!
at the time there was two Jags available in my area, one an S3, other an XJS , both LUMPS , S3 with a super 454 Big block chevy,, other with a lowly 350 chevy!
yes am VERY familier with early Chevy V8s, so it did not seem special to me , and i needed something special/unusual,etc.
and i think the term Lump came from England, not USA! like it has a big LUMP of IRON under the hood, NOT aluminum(opinion ).

Hey ,how about a 4 cylinder turbo engine ,GM ECOTEC 2.2L.
pix, 1400 HP,. and still be a LUMP! maybe optimistic, but would beat every car on this site,with half that number,12 yrs ago! check the boost#s Jeezz. dyno graph. 900ft lbs that should get it done!
Man, if people are upset about an engine conversion, they would really hate what I have done to my S2. I cut the wiring harness out of the engine bay and most other parts of the car. Put plenty of holes in the car to add new features too :P
I am considering making a CAN bus system for this old car and doing away with most of the wiring harnesses and making new custom ones.
@LnrB I have moved out to Cali since the last time I posted on this section. Would be really fun if i got the chance to meet you and nix with my S2 once I get it back on the road.

I have just read your post about your conversion, and I think you have done a Magnificent job!
I'm not very quiet about my thoughts regarding conversions or not; It's YOUR car, and you have the RIGHT to do to it whatever YOU want to do; go to great lengths to keep it "Original" (how to you get 1970s air in the tires and gas in the tanks?) or ditch the OEM power plant and bring in up to modern technology. Work and expense is probably about the same.
As for us meeting our cars up, California is a Very big state and we're at opposite ends of it. And no, we've never traveled that far south than San Francisco for car stuff or anything else.
Let's table this for now and talk again when you get your car on the road.

I had a 12C in 1979. Sable Brown, totally stock, in the heat of a coastal Virginia summer continually ran hot in town, but really woke when strolled down the interstate. Loved that car. Sold it to buy the first wife a diesel Mercedes that I detested. Glad she kept it.
In the late 80's I bought another Sable Brown coupe, a 6C out of Texas with as it turned out a LOT of issues not disclosed at purchase, the split in the block between cylinders 3 & 4 being the biggest. When the restoration was done, it had a block from a series 3 car with better cooling, a gas flowed head with big valves, Euro-spec HD8 carbs, GM Turbo 700 transmission with lock up, the big headlights of course, and repainted red as well. Didn't light up like the 12, but still strong and a real highway cruiser as well.
I'm on my third XJC, a retirement gift I've waited 20 years to buy. A 1977, It came with a Chevrolet 350 TPI, with an aftermarket chip good for 300HP, though currently not installed. It's lowered a little, repainted an 84 Cadillac Black Cherry, and dare I say, everything mostly works. She turns heads wherever we go. Have had this one since April. Living as I do in the Midcoast of Maine, the only time it's been in the shop, I just took it to a regular garage, not the place where the BMW has to go. I'm the third owner since the makeover, only 4th owner in the car's history. I tracked down the gentleman who did the mods, still alive at 85. Gave me great pleasure to tell him his baby is alive and well and quite the looker. He documented the build religiously, which has been a big help reacquainting myself with the breed.

for you XJC guys , had a 1975 XJ12C ,black , MANUAL shift 4 speed, great car run over a 100MPH in 3rd gear, with 4th waiting to shift!
odd about values on XJCs, guy gave it to me FREE just so his wife would stop bitchin,HOA ,BS!
i sold it to guy in Hawii! spine drive wheels ,two ear knockoffs!
