Question Wiring conundrum for XJ6 Series 3

G'day everyone,

No, I don't have a Jaguar... but when I saw an XJ6 motor seized solid and rotting in a paddock, and noted the wonderful DOHC straight-6 configuration, I had to rescue it of course. The motor now runs very well indeed. Maybe will end up powering a some sort launch for cruising the Swan River here in Perth...

Anyway, when I got the motor the alternator was shot... and the old regulator that was there was also too ruined-looking to bother with. So I replaced them both... but I still can't get the system charging when the motor is running.

So can anyone tell me (i) whether the alternator and regulator I've got are appropriate, and (ii) if so, how do I wire things up?

Alternator:
OEX 12V 55A Denso Style - DXA435.
This has a 3-pin plug on the back with terminals labelled F, E, and N.
There is also the large and separate "B" terminal which I presume is the for the alternator's output to the regulator.
Regulator:
This is an old style rectangular unit with a black plastic casing.
It has a series of terminals along the front lower edge labelled (left to right) "E", "D", "WL", "F", and "B".
Can anyone give me any pointers to how to wire all this up? I have had a go but the system is not charging... so either I have missed something, or one of the components is a dud (albeit new), or the regulator is not the correct type for the alternator.

Cheers,
Mike.

I understand Alternators have their own built-in voltage regulators. Why would you need a separate regulator (assumedly a RB340 regulator) which were used with Generators ?

Hmmm... well you can probably tell I'm not an electrical whiz..
But my understanding is that the model alternator I have got doesn't have an integral regulator/ rectifier?

I am not an expert either.
I have both a 1965 and a 1984 Jaguar. The 1965 has a Generator with a separate RB340 voltage regulator with the markings as you described.
The 1984 has an Alternator with a built-in voltage regulator.

So I would first confirm that your alternator does NOT have a built-in voltage regulator before proceeding.

Just put a generic delco 1 wire alternator on it? Easy parts house availability...

Thanks, that has occurred to me, BUT before forking out $$$ for another alternator, I want to be sure I can't get the current one working.
I am sure all it needs is (i) the correct regulator (ii) wired up the correct way.

I Googled :

"OEX 12V 55A Denso Style - DXA435"

What comes up is an alternator that would never have been used on a Series III Jag. And no Series III Jag I've ever seen had an external voltage regulator. I suspect someone has done some modifying and/or parts swapping so none of the original wiring schematics will be of any help

If you can identify and/or send a pic of your voltage regulator and the connections at the back of the alternator and maybe we can figure something out

Or try to determine the original application of a DXA435 alternator....and from there perhaps proper schematics can be found

Cheers
DD

Thanks for that Doug. Yes, I have been wondering what the original alternator should be/ have been, and realising I may have fallen into the trap of "if it's there it must be correct".
I'll endeavour to take some photos of the voltage regulator and the alternator later today, and post them up.
I've been having such a saga with trying to figure out this charging system... maybe I should just bite the bullet and install a 1-wire alternator as slofut suggested above. But they ain't cheap! Is it the price of copper that has sent the prices through the roof?

Uh oh... I haven't looked at prices on those in a long time. Looks like around $90 on amazon. That's a lot less than the one on my '98 toyota beater!

I cannot believe that it's possible to pay up to $1000 for an alternator. The word 'gouging' comes to mind.
