Default XJ6 arrived - raft of questions

Hey,
Picked my 1969 xj6 up today from the car carriers soo happy driving home i noticed a whole range of problems i'm hoping for your help with.

It has a 350 chev (lpg) with an auto from an xjs sitting behind it, not sure what year, i have to spend some time under it this weekend collecting info.

the speedo jumps +- 5mph any suggestions for fixes?

The tacho doesnt work at all

the volts, oil pressure, clock, water temperature guages dont work at all
(the fuel guage doesnt either but i have an aftermarket one for LPG fitted elsewhere)

The wipers worked once then stopped

the indicators worked then stopped 500m from home :L

the windscreen washer doesnt work at all.

the horn doesnt work at all

can i confirm that the aerial is at the back right of the car? there is a black knob there but it appears the antennae has broken off

a bunch of lights dont work but that could be bulbs

accepting all suggestions for fixes. I have the workshop manual and a range of tools and will be going over the car this weekend.
Thanks in advance

Hi Glenn , good to hear you got your car. Sounds a lot like a lot of busy weekends sorting that list.

I would start with checking all the fuses, Behind the gauges in the centre of the dash. There are two fuse panels and also look at the back of the gauges, there are a couple there too, also a couple up under the dash around the steering column area.

Which workshop manual do you have? Some are better than others.

Many weekends to fix all that. But, a good feeling as one fixes each flaw. And the car runs and drives. A huge step forward. LPG is a complete mystery to me. Except once. Story follows.

In 55, new wife, child and I came home from service in Germany. We bought a "cracker box" house. $5.750.00!!!! No cooling, though. but,
the ducts and stuff were stubbed in for a roof top "desert cooler".
Visiting Uncle. He gave me one that was refurbished. New pads, cleaned and painted, etc. Well, my 54 Chev company car useless to get it a couple of miles to home and on to the roof???

Unc. says, no big deal. Take my winch truck. A much battered 46 Chevrolet on LPG. OK, on my way, wifey and daughter stayed to chat.

Got there, backed the truck into position. cooler dangling from the "gin poles". How the h... does this winch work??? Trans in neutral, engage power take off , start the lift??? Oh h.... engine died???
No crank, pooped battery??? Too proud to call uncle. Was goung to attach an electric motor to the generator and get some volts to fire it up. Here comes Uncle, in my Chev. Chained up, A quick pull, old truck fired immediately. I went roof top, Unc ran the winch. Set it just right on the duct. Yahoo.

We went back, Unc in my Chev, me in the old truck. Dinner and drinks awaited.

Unc in admiration. "You sure found a great woman!!!:.

Next day, up on the roof, water and power connected. Threw the switch inside. Cooool air. Wifey impressed, always a good thing...

Tach. Takes pulses from the distributor. Oh, oh, expects 6 cylinder spacing, getting 8 !! Modules available to fix that.

Thanks for your help guys
I found some of the fuses behind the gauges but not the sneaky ones under the wires and I didn’t know there was some under the steering column.

01xjr
I have two manuals. A book the Jaguar Daimler owners workship manual (fifth from the left). I also have a CD I think by the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust.
I’m in Mt Gravatt, I look forward to being an active part of the club!

JagCad
LPG is a mystery to me too, I had to look up a video of how to fill up the tank!
I’ll look into that box to fix the pulses from the distributer, any idea what theyre called?

Does the series 1 xj6 have a cable driven speedo (it appears it does)? i'm searching through the foum for others with similar problems but have only found stuff for newer cars which have electronic stuff.

Glenn, the Haines one covers series 1-3 and is fairly good for most things but is not model specific. The maroon one is series 1 only and very detailed with clear wiring diagrams. Its by Bently publishing. Publication number E.155.

The orange book is slimmed down version of the Bently book, a parts book is handy too.
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/bickl...gue/1126424513

The speedo is cable driven with a 90 degree gearbaox at the back of it where the cable goes in try lubricating that.
I have bought stuff off this guy if you need a new speedo.

Here is a Bently manual on ebay in Brisbane, no bids! I paid 50 for mine. Make the seller an offer. Still good buying at 100, it has very detailed drawings and is not much over the cost of a mechanic for an hour.

Thank you! Ive bid on the book and contacted that guy about the guages. Im creating a list of parts to buy so if you know any other people that might have boxes of bits around I'd be interested. in brisbane/australia preferred, ive been checking through jagbits and sng barret and similar too.

Make Rich an offer, he is negotiable and he had those gauges sitting for nearly 3 years.

I have a bit of stuff around in boxes, mainly smaller things. Shoot me a private message if you think of anything I may have it.
If there are series 1 parts for sale around SEQ I usually have them on my watch list in Gumtree and Ebay, I keep a close eye on the market just in case.

These two locals are good for used parts.(one in Esk delivers by courier)

I'm in Jindalee.
Not a club, but a small group of enthusiasts who get together a few times a year for a drive and socialising. Or jump in and help each other out when we can.

If you need any part numbers just shout out.

The best way to see the fuses under dash is pop the speedo and tacho out and remove the cover under the steering column.
To remove the gauges push them in slightly and turn anti clockwise, you will feel it when they are free. Bayonet type of fitting.

No need to move the steering column, I had it out to replace the steering lock.

Default Tach needs to be converted

Had two of them done, they put modern internal parts for V8. I use a place in CA but I am sure there are closer places to your home.

Speedo cable probably needs lubing to work smoother. WW are a thing of their own... do not work well at best. When you get around to it I can provide photos of the steps to take... motor is hidden behind the battery and the wipers are cable driven... you can try putting thin lube oil down the wiper arm
attachment points..

Cleaning all the contact points on the PCB attaching points does wonder to the gauges... that is if you have battery voltage there? The windshield washer is just a small pump and the hose to the wiper nozzles in the center of the grill near the windshield. Confirm the hose and nozzles are not clogged... a new pump is available everywhere if actually needed.

+1 Glenn,
You sure dribbled a bibful about Clarke.
For those of us who knew him well, before he became rich and famous . . . Clarke has amassed some of the finest up-to-date knowledge of many things Jaguar and the broad network of people, parts and resources that support the early XJ6 . . . and not just on the local scene.

PS . . . I think he has pics of everything that makes up one of these classics . . . including the fire engine support vehicles which attend his Sunday roasts!

Glenn, I loved your intro! I was tempted initially, with so many thingies on your car not working, to ask if it came with any bonus extras like wheels and seats . . . but I thought that demeaning (funny, but inappropriate!). My next reaction was to use phrases like "Brave choice, grasshopper!" but then . . . the whole Jaguar scene exudes the "out of the ordinary" and it takes winners of all kinds, all backgrounds, to rise to the challenge of restoring and maintaining these fine classic cars.

Suddenly, I recalled my first experience with the grand beastie in my avatar . . . my new introduction to the world of Jaguar . . . proudly parked in our Lithgow NSW driveway . . . just in time for the Blue Mountains "once in a century" 5 day snowstorm to fell a huge nearby tree and flatten the Jag's roof clean down to the windowsills? After many, many hours of professional help, then months of DIY, we spent the following 6-7 years putting nearly 250,000 miles on her . . . that was nearly 50 years ago and it was all FUN!!! These forums of full of personal DIY successes.

So, Glenn . . . jump in. Do your research, then ask questions. Above all, be methodical, work tidily, take pics and make plenty of notes. In return, you will be rewarded with the satisfaction of ticking off each of those challenges . . . and enjoying the sheer pleasure of a magnificent classic car.

Cheers and best wishes,

Ken

Hello, Glenn,
Don't despair, even before I found this place I had to fix, adjust, replace, and/or repair no fewer than 77 items on my car (some of them critical to safety, all of them necessary for comfort and proper function), things that suffered from nothing more or less than years of neglect.

Little things stack up and grow until they become BIG PROBLEMS that owners don't want to face. But between Clarke and Roger, our Series 1 Gurus, you're well covered.

Thanks for the reminder Ken, almost a distant memory from the start of a steep learning curve. Well prepared these days.

Thanks everyone!
I spent some time on saturday going over bits, i got the window washer working with a clean and fiddle.
I got the indicators working on the hazard switch swapping some wires, cleaning a rusted globe butt and resoldering some wire connectors.

I got the headlights working, i was stoked to find Repco stocked replacements on the shelf! $25 each! I was momentarily distracted by a ridiculous amount of dirt behind the RH head light, not sure how that got there. I want to go back in and repaint with rust killer and re paint. I also want to get all new matching screws, it appears theyre all rusty, mismatching and i'm not sure whats holding everything in really.

I partially got the horn working by hot wiring it but ran out of time/motivation to address the rest of the system. didnt get to wipers.

I dropped it off at an Auto Electrician today with all the manuals expecting "oooh, thats going to take a while/ be tricky" but he was like "that wont be hard, see you at lunch time" WINNING! cost $100, he got the wipers working, horn working, removed some rogue wires, removed a mystery car alarm system and got all the guages working!

Also picked up my first box of spares from Richard off gumtree, nice bloke.

Cat-as-trophy, the car was recently repainted and recently reupholstered so its pretty nice cosmetically, just lots of bits to tidy up. goes for RWC and child seat on Wednesday and the rest i can do more slowly i hope!

Sounds like a very productive weekend, and good auto electrician too. Good luck with the RWC.
Try Bolts and Industrial Supplies at Salsbury for new screws and bolts. They don't mind taking the time to match them up to your old ones. Even for small orders, and usually have most things in stock. I put all new screws in all my lights when i repaintd. Didn't seem right to spend money on paint then put rusty screws back in.
Who is the auto electrician?
Did you win the auction on the manual off ebay?

Absolutely great progress. Consider the dumping of the theft alarm
a major step toward a dependable car. They do two things well. Irritate folks when they honk for no good reason. Mess up touchy electrics.
Do they deter thieves? Naah, even the dumb ones can silence them quickly.

I won the auction for the manual, I think I have the CD version but I got it anyway. The gentlemen was very nice and invited me to ring up for a chat about jags this week which I think I will do!

Thanks for the tip about the screws.

Although the auto electrician was cheap, he did not fix all the problems (grr) my car failed the roadworthy with a long list of problems two of which were inoperable reverse lights and inoperable horn . He fixed the gauges and removed the car alarm and got the wipers working perhaps that was enough. Problems to be addressed now…

Wiper motor (sourced today from Prestige Spares 2nd hand) might consider a rebuild if possible/ affordable before putting it in.

Windscreen (found one at autoglass warehouse $195) do I need to get new rubber too?

Reverse lights don’t work, he thinks something to do with something in the gear selector

Power steering rack is leaking. Thoughts on where to find one?

Rear wheel bearings required (big job?)

Needs rear trailing arm bushes front and rear (big job?) suggestions on a source?

Front bearings (they were tightened but while im shopping I’ll get some new ones)

What is particularly frustrating is I paid a mechanic in NSW to look at the car before I bought it. This is the list of problems I’m going to fix, there are several others an inept mechanic could find that I will address later. Sigh, grumble and move on.

I always prefer a hard copy of the manual, My jeep manual is 1700 pages of PDF. It Sucks(lucky I'm a printer, I have hard copy now)

Glenn, just shot you a PM. Tony will get you sorted for rego transfer and on the road.

Does your car have modification plats for Qld? For the V8 conversion.( can help here too)
No really big jobs in there, done most of them here in my garage. Apart from PS rack, but LnrB will be along to fill you soon, she has done it recently.
