Default Xlj6?

My friend sent me pictures of his granfather's XJ6 that's been in the garage for years, and (pardon my ignorance if this is common knowledge but I couldn't find it anywhere) the rear of the vehicle says XLJ6, not XJ6. Can someone please explain to me why there's an L there? I think it's a 1970 or 1972 vehicle.

It could be an "XJ6" or an "XJ6L", where the "L" stands for long wheelbase.

The "L" designation was used on the Ser II cars ('74-'79 in the USA), discontinued for quite a few years, and then reappearing in the mid-90s.

A very, very small number of Ser I cars ('68 to '73) were built on the long wheelbase. It is very unlikely that grand dad's car is one of them...but you never know.

Anyhow.....

Somewhere along the line the "L" was installed where it doesn't belong.

Here's the picture from the set of pictures he sent me that shows the badging on the rear end. Does the L look out of place or could it actually be a long wheelbase version?

It's a Ser II USA market car so it almost certainly IS an "L" version. Someone just got the letters out of place
