1989 Jaguar XJS
I have an XJS V12 showroom with 29K miles. My buddy drove the car and agree's it is a puff but wondered why it would kick into overdrive or passing gear. Is there a passing gear or overdrive? thanks.

Second of all:
Unless modified (sounds highly unlikely), the car has a 3 speed automatic transmission.
Basically, if you're cruising in 3rd between roughly (someone else feel free to chime in with the exact range) 40mph and 80mph, and depress the accelerator all the way to the floor, the kickdown switch engages and the transmission shifts to 2nd gear. I'm pretty sure it will not kickdown from 2nd to 1st under any circumstances.
Most likely this is what you are experiencing. It should still be smooth though. If this is happening without flooring it, something is wrong.

Not sure if I understand the question,but....
Your XJS has the Jaguar version of the GM Th400 tranmission. It's a 3-speed auto; no overdrive.
An electric switch on the throttle cable will allow a full throttle "kickdown"/downshift into a lower gear/passing gear.
The TH400 also has a "part throttle downshift", vacuum controlled, which will allow a 3-2 shift at partial throttle, depending on engine load and road speed.

you have to push the pedal all the way to the floor for a downshift. If it will not downshift it is the micro switch next to the round throttle linkage. It fits into a little notch in the throttle cable sheath actually and there is a piece on the cable that when floor closes the switch.
Check the switch by actuating it with your finger it should click, if it doesn't click press it harder and it may snap loose and begin working again.
