Default 1995 XJS V12 engine knock

Hi

I need your advices, I brought my 1995 XJS 6.0l with 45 000 miles to my mechanic for an oil change, transmission, differential, brakes fluid and coolant.

In the process I was told there was an oil leak and valve covers needed to be replaced, I agreed doing the job.

Today they started the engine everything was OK for 15 minutes and then the engine started to knock.

My mechanic ( referred to me by my Jaguars owner club buddies in Montreal) told me that timing chain and tensioners needs to be replaced.

When I brought my car it was silk smooth running as a V12 should be.

Your inputs will be really appreciated.

Thanks

Sylvain

Take the vehicle to another Jaguar specialist for a second opinion.

How much oil did the engine lose from the leak?

Is the noise more apparent when accelerating slightly, or is it there during idle?

It's highly unlikely that the timing chain tensioners need to be replaced with only so few kilometres/miles.

It is in your best interest to obtain a second opinion on the location and cause of the noise.

Default UPDATE

Hi there,

My mechanic told me late yesterday that the problem was the SPRINGS in the tensioner

And those springs are supposed to be weak on V12 like mine

Is this right

Thank you for inputs it is really appreciated.

Cheers

Sylvain,

V12 timing chain tensioners are good for 150,000 miles + if undisturbed. I would not accept what you are being told & would be seeking a 2nd opinion from a recommended technician - can you find a recommendation from your local Jaguar (drivers, enthusiasts) club?

Rgds.

A.

The tensioner on the V12 is a part that will probably outlive the car. Heck, maybe even you But it doesn't mean it can't fail. Maybe they turned the engine back too far... OB will probably shout around not to turn it backwards, but you can. Just not too far
