I have the same problem in my 95. the ABS light just comes on once a while but the brake seems to work fine so I just ignore it now. I did some online search. Some people said it could be the ABS accumulator is failing but I don't want to replace the accumulator until I am 100% sure.

I have a 1996 XJS with 29.5k miles and have the same problem - random ABS light coming on. Just had the 30k mile service performed and both myself and my mechanic tested the system - with the key off pump the brake about 20 -30 times - this should evacuate the accumulator. When you start up the abs light should stay on for about 25 seconds - shows that the pressure is being built up in the accumulator. From what I understand, if the abs light only stays on for the normal 6 seconds or so on start up, then there is an accumulator or other problem. My mechanic actually posted this question in a forum for jaguar mechanics he belongs to
and he's yet to receive a reply.

I have a friend with a 96 XJS and he had the same ABS light problem a couple of years ago, but it went away after awhile. Typical jaguar idiosyncracy in my mind. I also have a problem with tach coming and going - hit a bump it comes on. When it works it's accurate so I'm thinking a bad ground here as the speedometer, odometer and trip meter work fine. Go figure.

Same issue here with my '95 XJS except no noise or shaking when braking. It is definitely an intermittent problem and the light usually goes on when I hit a good bump in the road. Goes out after 20-30 seconds. I will have to try El Gato's test of the accumulater.

Your problem could be a dirty sensor, connection or a bad connection in the ABS module. This link from the XK8 section might help Front Brakes on 2001 XKR - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum Good Luck!
