You really don't need to buy or rent the tool. The airbag arming pin is just a half-moon pin. So you can use a thin wall socket (something like 6mm or 7mm from memory) and then just glue a small sliver of wood in it to create a half-moon shape. I even used some long-nose pliers and undid the pin once.
Just make sure you've fully read the manual and understood the mechanism before you start the work.

Battery has nothing to do with the airbags on the xjs. The are an independent self contained explosive charge.
I took a bolt and drilled a 5mm hole in it, wacked it with a hammer on one side and made the tool. As can be seen in the removing the steering wheel video here
