Default Body restoration: all at once or bit by bit?

Hey guys,

Even though my project has halted, I still need some welding done and that pesky sunroof removed.

What would you say is the cleverest way around this:

1. Have all the welding and painting done at once and then get the mechanics running
2. Have the welding done but paint only in the areas later not accessable
3. Have the welding done step by step as required with paint at the same time

I know this is a budget thing, but bare in mind, my XJ-S has to sit outside at the moment. So no chance of protecting the paint until it is fully drivable again...

What's your opinion?

My advise
Get the mechanics out of the way then worry bout the cosmetics

I agree.... bodywork and paint is expensive and time consuming, and you can do alot of damage leaning over fenders, etc on fresh paint. Get it running and shaken down, then do cosmetics. JMHO

As some work in the engine bay needs to be done (welding), and the engine is out, it wouldn't make sense to get that in again, running, and then take it all out again

If engine is out then repair underhood problems before installing but leave outside body and paint till all mechanical is up to snuff.

Do everything that is made easier with the engine out. Leave everything else until it's purring.

Daim if it were me I would do all the body work (funds permitting) before you put it back together. I made this mistake, I did all the body work except the engine bay and when I replace the engine I have to strip and paint the bay, would have been much easier to do it all at once.
