a/c compressor

a/c compressor
It appears my a/c compressor has taken a dump. I read on here somewhere that rebuilts are actually better than new. If so, I will have mine rebuilt, unless there is a more cost effective or better overall replacement. Has anybody replaced theirs with a different/better/more common compressor or is a rebuild my best course of action.
Thanks, Terry

Your 1990 XJS has the GM/Harrison "A6" compressor. Millions have been used since the 60s. Very common. Great unit but nortoriously parasitic.
Rebuilt anything---compressors, alternators, starters, whatever---is a real hit-n-miss proposition these days in my experience. Certainly not better than new in most cases.
Some outfits are selling a brand-new all aluminum version of the old A6. Only about $350 or so, I think. Worth investigating. Googling "Aluminum A6 compressor" will probbaly get you all the info you need.
Others replace the A6 with a Sanden unit with good results. This surely requires some different hoses and mountings and such but it can be done!
If you go with a rebuilt make sure you get the right one. Despite popular belief A6 compressors are NOT "all the same". There were several minor variations over the years. In your case the main thing to watch for is "Superheat switch" type versus "HSLP" type. Your 1990 will use the HSLP (High Side, Low Pressure) type. This refers to the type of protection switch is used to cut off the compressor if freon is lost.
Cheers

Some UK suppliers sell new upgraded internals in the A6 housing format meaning no change of hoses etc.
As Doug says rebuilt is hit and miss. I tried them three times in two cars over a few years, one is still OK 4 years later. The other two lasted less than one year. Now that I am replacing the engine in my XJ12C I will replace the dying AC compressor as well. I intend to go down the Sanden route as I will be replacing all the hoses + dryer anyway.
