Common Odometer Failure?
Hi XJS Folks,
I was looking at a '95 XJS and it has some odd mileage discrepancies where it appears that the 100k mile indicator has rolled several times and is not accurate, i.e. history shows 120k miles, odometer shows 520k miles. I've read a bit into odometer issues and it sounds like it's a fairly common issue. My question though, is the 100k indicator a common failure where it rolls when it shouldn't roll? Does the true mileage lie somewhere in one of the computers in the car that is accessible through a dealer or a specialist? The car is definitely way too clean for 520k miles, but without knowing the actual mileage or history of the car, I'm wondering if I'm too apprehensive or if the actual mileage can be obtained through a computer and have the odometer repaired - if I were to further pursue.
Thoughts?

Just the ODO issue could set you back a grand.
So odometer can be repaired, I've seen a few sources for that online. But is there a means of determining the actual mileage from any of the electronic systems in the car? No other issues aside from the usual seat wear.
The odometer is just mechanical cogs, no bells or whistles. If you take the gauges out, its fairly simple to take them out and replace or fix. If not fixable get a set from ebay and turn them over to your correct milage.
No, the speedos didn't change to LCD. They are all simple items. There's no computer system in the car that can give you the accurate total mileage. If you can't fix it, just buy a used item from ebay and set it to the mileage you want.

FYI: ADJUSTING AN ODOMETER IS A FEDERAL OFFENSE, FOR ANY REASON.
I would not be surprised if you find a warning label inside the cluster.
Then this is what you need to do.
You will need to disassemble the gauge cluster to get access to the odometer tumblers.
On every odometer I have worked on the tumblers are held in place with sheet metal.
The 'axles' that hold the tumblers in place are in slits in the metal and the ends of the slits are then pressed closed.
You must register the angle of the numbers the with the correct numbers are pointing BEFORE YOU OPEN THE SLITS.
If you don't the numbers will never appear back in the widows like they are supposed to.
The first time I did this I had to repeatedly take it apart and trial and error it back together several times.
If you carefully open the slits on both ends you can just remove the tumblers.
Press the sheet metal back together very carefully just enough to hold the axles.
Too much pressure and they will not roll freely.
Good luck.
