Default dash lights

I just obtained my 1995 XJS VP. and the dash lights are not working,I have checked all fuses, all o.k. i have been told it is the headlight switch. when i turn on the headlights, they work ok. the dimmer switch is also working ok.
could it be the actual light switch located on the side of console. or is it the switch that also controls the running lights/trunk release ? any advise would be appreciated..................this is a great forum for assistance.... thanks everyone.

Judging from the description of the switchgear and the text of the intro post I think we're talking about a '96 XJ6 VanDen Plas....and X300 car.

I'd move the post over to X300 section and I'll reply there

Cheers
DD

Is it *only* the instrument cluster illumination that is inoperative? Or is also the window switch illumination, climate control buttons backlighting, cigarette lighter backlighting, etc?

They all work of the dimmer switch at the side of the steering column so if *any* of them work it suggests the dimmer switch is OK and the problem is dwonstream of the dimmer switch, possibly at the instrument cluster itself.

If *none* of them work it suggests a faulty dimmer switch or a problem upstream of the dimmer switch.

If you have a test light or meter some fairly easy tests could be made

Cheers

PS-hopefully this will all get moved to the right section

Newbie here so I thought I'd ask. I was toying around with the cigar lighter up front to see if I could make sense of what was going on with all the aftermarket wiring in there. I had no juice to either light so I thought I'd start up front for some reason....anyhow, the light itself was working. I, naively use the hot from the light on the lighter itself and then applied the cigar lighter load on it. Well. Now the light does now work when I moved it back nor do the dash lights.

Any idea what I broke?
