Default Failed Ontario Etest again

I've had the Jag (1990 V12) in twice now with 2 fails.
Here in Ontario Canada, a car the is older than 1996 is tested at idle and again at about 2500 rpm with sniffers in the exhaust.
First attempt passed the high rpm
HC limit =200 test =136 pass
CO limit =1 test =.67 pass

First attempt failed idle
HC limit =200 test =412 FAIL
CO limit =1 test =.69 pass

Then I changed air filters, oil filter, oil, sparkplugs, wires, cap and rotor

Second test passed high rpm
HC limit =200 test =149 pass
CO limit =1 test =.87 pass

Second attempt idle
HC limit =200 test =225 FAIL
CO limit =1 test =.81 pass

What do these numbers suggest to you?
converters,o2 sensors vacuum.
Any ideas to squeek it by this time, maybe a fuel additive, or some other trick.

Just want to put a few miles on it before winter comes and I take it apart for a paint job and other maintenance.

Thanks for your help

I would use E85 blended gas to breeze through emissions.
Ethanol will burn cleaner and only a few gallons should be needed!
Easy fix versus O2 sensors and cats.

E85 is all but unavailable in Ontario (thankfully).

Did you mean to say E10 (10% ethanol) or meant E85 (85% ethanol).

I'm not sure the car would run on E85 even if it was available.

You are so close E10 blended at 20-30% should get you through.

I would not run straight E85 as some non SS lines could be effected.

I have a flexfuel truck that runs on E85 and the fuel lines and fuel filter are larger. I also use about 15-20% more fuel. Not a bargain!

I think your catalytic converters may be dirty.

There is an old trick you can try which is to add a little lacquer thinner to your gas and then do about 150 miles to clean out your cats.

Another thing which is great, get the aerosol sea foam that will clean things up. However your car will smoke A LOT from the exhaust for about 20 minutes. Sea foam claims to clean cats. I don't know if this is true but it sure does clean your intake and valves.

Good luck passing emissions.

At that age my guess would point to 02 sensors failing, certainly worth considering checking at least.

check Terraclean as a possible way to help reduce emmissions

By all means watch the while video, but the part you're really interested in comes in at around 6 mins 30 secs

Ha Ha! just got back from Canadian Tire (auto parts store) picked up a couple cans of SEA FOAM.
Tonight I will give it the treatment. I also picked up a gallon of ethanol, I will add it to 5 gallons of gas and see what the results are.

Gunner- there's a very good chance that the gas you're using is already 10% ethanol.

Buy CRC Guaranteed to Pass® Emissions Test Formula 05063 at Advance Auto Parts

There's also this product called "Guaranteed to Pass" which may work for you as well?

Yay! I passed

Third try idle test results

HC limit =200 test =200 pass
CO limit =1 test =.29 pass

I ran 2 cans of SEA FOAM through the intake while running the engine and I added 1 gallon of ethonal to five gallons of the highest octane I could get 94
Now I can drive it for a few weeks before the snow comes

Gunner,

Glad she passed the test

In the future, one thing that you might try which is a lot cheaper and a lot more fun, is to do an Italian tune up.

Right before you take the test, ensure your petrol tank is less than a quarter full and pour in a 20 oz bottle (or more) of a cleaner like Techron. After warming the engine up, take it on the motorway at speed and use a lower gear to keep the rpms high, at least 5000rpm. Run the car like that for at least 20-30 minutes then go straight to the testing place.

You will be surprised how often that does the trick and it's always a pleasure to hear the engine wail

Cheers,

Allan

Good News! Much cheaper than cats & O2 sensors. Most of our cars are not driven hard enough or often enough to heat the cats up burn the residues out of it.

That likely would have worked, the last owner stated the car was in storage the last 4-5 years and he would occasionally run it in the garage.
So it's very likely the car could use a real good highway run "Itailian tune up"

Thanks for all the suggestions, I will use them in 2 years
