Smile Faulty Headlamp Relay?

Hi,

I have a feeling this is a faulty DAC6902 relay issue but I would be very grateful for anyone's comments.

About four months ago I started having a weird problem with the headlights in my car.

When you switch the lights on everything seems normal, but the instruments are slightly dim and turning the instrument light adjustment makes no difference.

Whenever I switch onto full beam all the dashboard lighting goes out!

Also recently I realised that when I switch the full beam on it also switches all my taillights off as well.

I tried pulling the relay out, looks ok condition wise, pushed it back in and all seemed well. But the next day back from work it did it again.

I'm not sure if it's coincidence with the removal of the relay?

It certainly points to earthing of some kind.

It's not dangerous because I can just drive with low beam for the time being but I obviously want to get this sorted.

Any help would be cool. Many thanks.

More likely *lack* of earthing, IMHO. Check the headlamp earths/grounds.

However, it seems like someone recently had a similar probablem and it turned out to be related to aftermarket LED bulbs. I can't quite remember the detials.

Cheers

Hi DD,

Yes I did wonder that. The car is in pretty good condition (about 25,000 miles)

I would need to investigate earthing layout to get a better idea.

I had a constant blowing fuse with the interior lights which turned out to be the factory putting the sunvisor screw straight through the wire in the roof!

I haven't had any fuses blow (even with the lights on for hours) so hopefully it's not wiring damage.

I don't have any LED bulbs in the lighting but I know what you mean, their electrical load is so small that some systems tend to mess up afterwards.

Thanks.

Do you mean the physical location of the earth points?

You didn't say what year you have but on at least the 70s-thru early 90s models the headlight grounds are at each end of the upper radiator mounting panels as I recall

Cheers

Sorry my mistake.

It's a 1996 4.0l Celebration Car.

I could check the earths for the corrosion.

Are there any more relating to lighting that are worth looking at?

The relays and wiring all look very good. No corrosion on the points.

The only downside I have is I live on an island so I'm constantly doing shortish journeys so I'm sure that doesn't help too much either!
