There has been a faint smell of gasoline in the trunk area of my 89 XJS

convertable for as long as I have owned it.There has never been any

visable leaks or gasoline under the car. In the past couple of weeks I

have removed the surge tank assemble and replaced the Fuel filter. Two

days ago I noticed just a couple drops of liquid under the tank close to

the filler neck. I didn't want to do it but I knew the tank would have to

come out for repair. Yeaterday I pulled the tank. It took about three

hours. After I got the tank out of the car I pulled the rubber mat off the

bottom and stood the tank on it's end and started filling it with water. I

went back to check on it a little later and there where eighteen differant

holes spewing water ! I guess the weight of the tank on the mat had

kept most of the holes sealed while it was in the car. Anybody know

where I can find a new tank ? ( I have pitures of the tank spewing water

if I can figure out how to upload them)

I think you will find "new" tanks NLA (no longer available), but I might be wrong for your part of the world, coz there just might be someone with a tank sitting in what spare parts guys call "dead stock".

Down here any decent "radiator repair shop" will reseal all those leaking spot welds (which I assume is where it is spewing), and then a proprietry inside seal kit could be applied.

If it is rusted out (Ethanol fuel does that), then some more serious repair will be required, nothing is irrepairable, just requires some imagination to get it done.

Try some of the suppliers listed/supported here. I have found obscure stuff in the past at XK Unlimited, San Loius Obispo.

 

Don't know where you can find a new one. You might try Everyday XJ to find a used one.

There are many fuel tank repair kits on the market to repair your pinholes. Or a shop can fix them as already mentioned.

Products such as Gas Tank RENU can reseal the inside of your tank to prevent future rusting/leaks.

 

if its just some holes then fill them in. If you can't weld take it somewhere and get it done, should be cheap to just fill in some holes. Grind em smooth yourself.

if you wanna go all out ...and this will still cost less than a new tank....get a kit and reseal the inside of the tank to do it right.

 

Thanks all. After doing lots of research I think I am going to repair the

tank and seal the inside. While the tank is out I will also replace all the

parts and pieces that make up the tank assembly.

I did locate a couple of proffessionaly rebuilt tanks. One was priced at

$1050.00 and the other at $1350.00 . Each required a core exchange.

The core to be exchanged could not have any holes, dents, rust or

damage. If I had a tank that met those requirments I wouldn't need to

purchase a new one. I now know what it's like to be a poor boy

driving a rich mans car.
