Default Gearshift Lever Wont Move Into Drive

96 XJS conv. Gearshift lever wont move out of park. Vehicle starts but wont move into park. How does one get the lever to move to park? Is this a common problem on this model jag? Have heard about this problem with the XJ saloon and sometimes with the xk8 sometimes. Comments/suggestions?

You're pushing the lever to the side, and then trying to move it, with your foot on the brake? Do the brake lights come on?

There is a solenoid to allow the lever to move out of park when the brake is pressed.

Brake lights do come on. Pushing the lever to the left? No, I don't think so. The lever moves slightly to the right. This is an intermittent issue. Thanks for the info on the solenoid.
