Question Help - Convertible: Top Replacement

Hi there,

its time to replace my topon my 93 XJS convertible. The canvas has serious wear and tear. Also, there are two areas around the back glass window were it is ripped; therefore, when it rains I cannot drive due to leakage.

Now, the functionality of the top is working just fine. I was told by my expensive Jag Technician I have to replace the whole top. He gave me an estimate of about $2.500. YIKES!!!

Did anybody else had their top replaced? What is it that I truly have to purchase to make it worth my while and not get cheated?

Any advise is greatly appreciated!!!

Search on Google for Baltimore area car upholstery. There are at least a couple of shops that do tops in your area, and several more in the DC area. I suspect it can be done for less than half of what your repair shop quoted by a car upholstery shop.

Default top replacement

I just replaced the top on my '95 XJS. I did not replace the headliner as it was still in good shape. I bought my top on Ebay from diamondmall for $325 and had it installed for $600. Call around, the price for installation varies, some were cheaper. Also make sure they don't put it on too tight as I am going to have to go back to have 'em loosen it up a bit if that's possible because it won't close all the way by itself. I know I've seen tops for 6-700 online but the one I got is very nice. The only thing to be aware of is that it doesn't come with new loops for the cover to clip into so whoever does the installation will have to take the old ones off and sew them into the new top. Good Luck.

I replaced my top, headliner and pad on my '95 4.0 two years ago by myself. Not a bad job, some parts an extra pair of hands will help.
