Default How to tell if my a/c and heat system works?

So I'm about to get ready to tear into my engine but the one thing I haven't tested is the heating/air condition system.

I've been googling and it seems its not a normal system and is kind like a true climate system. Mine being an 88 its a mk3 system

So from what i gather i should let the car warm up then after its warmed up i should start cycling through the temp settings?

There was mention of using something hot to activate some sensor some where to get the ac to come on? Wheres this sensor at? Do I need to do that?

I thought all I had to do was turn the heat up all the way and then turn the cold all the way down but it seems a little.more complicated then that.

Outside Temps are about 10C now so if I need heat I guess I could use a lighter or something at that sensor?

Anyways suggestions are welcome. I'll be testing it in a week

Cheers

Just above the glove box is a hole. It leads to a pipe (assuming it's intact) that is an air sampling tube to check the interior car temp...if I have it right. Mine works fine so i haven't dug into it more than that. I usually set the temp dial where i want it, set the fan speed on min., then control cabin comfort with the air/heat slide...that's the main dash vent control. I always have the side air vents full open until its 0 deg C out.

You do.

The usual method is to use the cigarette lighter, held a couple inches from the hole, to trick the system into thinking the cabin is very hot. The heat from the lighter will be drawn into the pipe and across the temp sensor. The system should respond by going into full-cooling mode, providing chilled air primarily thru the center dashboard vent.

So where should the air lever in bottom middle be?

And RH knob in is auto out is manual right?

I think its working... I can hear a whining fan from behind the glove box but its 17C out and the air coming out isn't ice cold but its cool enough that today I wouldn't be dieing from heat lol

The slide control is just a 'trimming' device to slightly alter the upper vs lower outlet temperature. You won't even notice a difference until the cabin temp and climate control system have stabilized.

The LH knob has a "pull for manual control" feature. With the knob pulled out you'll simply be getting warmer or colder air as desired; the system will not be automatically adjusting the temperature

Ok thanks. I think its working then just needs a refresher is all. The high pitch while (like a bad fan belt) is probably the blower motor. motioned and goes as the system comes on and off. I'll get to it eventually lol

Thanks
