Default Ignition Key

Lets say an individual lost the keys to the ignition of his 84 XJS. How would one go about solving this problem?

I have a 1995 XJS. I also have all the original keys, but not the green valet key, so I asked about getting one at the parts counter of my local dealer. They have the original keys with the little gold growler on them ( not sure what your year's keys look like). I decided against ordering one, though, when I learned that they cost $50-$60.But they are available.

I've also seen key blanks on e-bay, but I'd be wary of going that route.

The 1984 XJS ignition key is easy. Cost is $15.12 for the blank and any locksmith or key machine can cut them. The round key is much later, starting in 1990.

Without an original ignition key, how would a local locksmith know how the blank key needs to be cut?

It's a standard key blank. You must take the lock with you as well. He will cut to fit the tumblers.

If no original, no choice. I would call a local locksmith and line things up first, but that's the only way I know they can do it. You may want to let them know that the lock barrel cannot be removed from the steering column lock. It's a mess. You will also need new shear bolts at $7.89 each. You need two of them. The car is too old for Jaguar to cut from the VIN.

The only other way I know is to buy an entire ignition lock with steering column lock and keys for $195. This includes new shear bolts.

It looks like I may have to get the new ignition lock. I've had no luck tracking down keys. Oh well.

Ken, can you hook me up?
