Inexpensive Rear Muffler Alternative
The rear mufflers on my 1991 XJ-S V-12 were overdue to be replaced, but I was not excited about spending around $200 each (plus labor). I searched diligently for an alternative. Walker had made one to fit (part 22491), which was about $90, but this muffler is discontinued. However, I found the Summit Racing site, which allows you to input your specifications and gives you mufflers that match. The Walker Sound FX 18362, which is about $25 (!), has inlets and outlets of 1 7/8", is 17" long and has a round design. My local muffler shop, McDonald Muffler (which is also a sponsor of my club's car show) installed them for just $50! The sound is throaty but not obtrusive (I recently "refurbished" my catalytic converters; the center mufflers are stock). As a bonus, the design of the Walker is in my opinion much more attractive as the muffler cannot be seen from the back of the car.
It's louder than stock, but these actually made it quieter. The extra-rooomy cats account for the increased volume, which is a nice throaty rumble that is inobstrustive in the cabin.
