Jaguar XJS 95 6 cyl engine fluttering and stalling

I have a Jaguar XJS 95 with the 4.0 litre 6 cylinder engine. I love the way the car looks and drives when it drives properly, but the only problem is that the engine will sometimes flutter when i accelerate. Also when i am idling or going at slow speeds/low rpms the car will just stall. Has anybody found a solution to either of these problems? Are there any alternatives to the expensive dealership charges for repairs? I am not too mechanically inclined so the more elementary the explanation the better. Thanks for the time.

Hi Marty,
Sorry I can't help you but was wondering if you found out what was causing the stalling. I just bought a 97 XJ6L and it's doing the same thing. So I'm guessing this isn't a rare problem.

Marty,
Sounds like your symptoms or a little different then Legalian's. I would clean the throttle body first and check for vaccuum leaks. The flutter sounds air or fuel related. Legalian's sounds electrical.

I still havent figured out what is wrong with my car, but I have figured out some ways to seem to help reduce the frequency of the problem. One is keeping my gas tank full for some reason it stalls less with this. Another thing is that when i start the car i will rev the engine a few times this really seems to help for some reason though i am not mechanically inclined. So if your car problems are like mine you might experiment with it, but no gurantees.
