BB, don't do it. It would be a great shame to spoil the lovely clean lines you have on what is probably the best looking XJS around.

Just my humble opinion.

BB. Love the car. Looks great.
I love the leaper and think the growler looks cheap. Poor finish. (sorry guys, my opinion).
But you cant have both !

i have not reinstated the leaper and strip , though i did think of blacking it out and fitting it?

this is not the leaper that fits over the growler mountings, its another version , but the fixings will fit......

For the love of all that's Holy, please don't put that leaper back! unless you're into something like self harming your Beautiful Car.

And as for that Strip down the bonnet/hood, Please don't even go there!

I know its your Car and of course you can do what you like but you will absolutely ruin the look of that beautiful long sweeping bonnet/hood.

This reminds me of current XF and XJ owners who claim the leaper is not a Jaguar accessory anymore, although, plain as day on jaguar.com it's noted as an accessory. A Jaguar accesory. Not "dealer"::

My grandfather bought the XJS in 95 and he states that there was Jaguar paraphernalia (not "dealer") which showed the Leaper as an accesory.

Well wether it's an accesory or not I love the leaper. It conveys a sense of continuity with the past.

I don't care for the new Jaguars so much, but if I had one I would certainly have a leaper fitted.

LOL

for over two years now i have been debating with myself over this very issue, and so far i have resisted

as i said earlier, i have access to a very good spare bonnet ( hood ) that i may alter drastically and then paint up in my white, as i have spare paint for her

i was going to punch louvers in the bonnet, and then black out the leaper and strip , and create custom air scoop where the grille currently sits,

this would be used as a swap out bonnet for days when i'm feeling crazy , lol

also , thanks everyone for the kind comments on my car,

BB

There's probably a good reason for that.

so guys. Still curious for an answer if anybody knows:

Did the run of XJS all have the same type of growler? I know newer Jags have different designs and color growlers so was curious. For example did the pre HE had one type the HE had another color? Anybody know?

no

four growlers that i know of

standard black

a polished highlights black

and gold ,

there was also a 4ltr celebration model growler for the facelift cars , this was real enamel on metal, not like the later S-Type stick on growlers

i think the gold was mostly the US market, but as ever , customers could buy and have fitted anything that Jaguar made to a new car

but i don think the ' bronze ' growler was fitted to an XJS , unless it was market specific or very early pre-HE

i may well be wrong ,

This may shed some light.

all very well and good, but thats JCNA , and not how the XJS left Browns Lane in England

all Jaguars ( and any foreign car ) imported into America needed different things bolted to them to meet US regulations , even down to a new registration tag ,,,,,,,,

so these JCNA rules do not apply to ' Factory " cars for the rest of the world

Paulyling ( who is in Oz )

follow the link below , item 1 , non USA......

Badge-Emblem-Coupe - Parts For XJS from (V)139052 to (V)179736 | Jaguar Heritage Parts AU

Jaguar Australia sell brand new black growler badges for $94 , they will get it to your local dealership for free where you can go pick it up and pay at the same time

or i can send you one from the UK if they can't supply it, ( if the item has a price next to it, then its in stock on that site )

old/used badges suffer a lot from road rash and corrosion, and will never be able to be refurbished to a satisfactory standard ,
the leaper fixings will fit the growler, you will need a rubber mask mount for the growler ( item 2 @ $0.77 )

I did some checking here, which covers Jan-87 and later XJS.....

Genuine Jaguar Parts and Jaguar Accessories for classic Jaguars from Jaguar Heritage Parts UK

Roughly speaking it looks like black growlers for cabs and converts and gold for coupes from VIN 139xxx to 179xxx

After VIN 179xxx it starts getting tricky with variants for ROW, USA, Canada, LeMans, blah blah blah. Too much for me to sort out after just one cuppa coffee

Not sure about car prior to Jan 1987

I have a fairly strong recollection of my Feb 87 coupe have a bronze-ish looking growler. Maybe that's what the gold looked like after years of exposure? I dunno.

Cheers
DD

I figured he was smart enough to figure out what JCN(north)A(america) stood for...it's a "GUIDE" jeeze, glad your here to point the error's in my ways and glad to know you are now the "source" for all things Jaguar (at least where Browns Lane is concerned) Give people credit for having some general intelligence as far as how Jaguar did business, after all we are mostly "Jaguar Enthusiasts" here, not uneducated turn key only *****.

It's been fun to read everyone's opinions on this topic. And I didn't know the leaper wasn't a factory item. I love learning new things about my car.

When the previous owner painted my car, they removed the growler and added the leaper. They also removed the plaques from the trunk. I'm glad they did both. I love the leaper. The growler is okay. But having both the growler AND the leaper looks too busy to me.

To each his own indeed. My '96 came with a badge and I took it off and had the car painted and put the small leaper on it. This leaper was on a lot of sedans in later years. Looks very chic to me. I will admit the large leaper with the large base does look a bit much to me.
Cheers, RagJag

Guys thanks for all the input. It has been most helpful. Thanks Brakebuster I checked out that link. It appears outside the US the appropriate growler is black for the coupe.

Thanks JT that was an interesting read that pdf. Another one to add to my collection.

Cheers Doug, it seems outside the US the badge designs change order for coupe cab and convert?

Guys appreciate all the info. Sorry if i stirred a little controversy!

Sorry BB I meant to stay neutral on that one.
