Hey Fellas, Just got done with making a custom grille for my XJS. Basically, I cut out all the guts and had it all sanded and painted flat black. Then I installed a recessed mesh grille towards the back of the grill. Made custom brackets on top and secured them with black screws. So, what do you think guys. I am not a purist so I know I am going against the grain but I hated the old grille.
Great and quite welcome improvement for an XJS. Your grille looks much nicer than the OEM grille.
The one thing that I did different with the mesh grille(s) on my '94 was to incorporate a TWR hint: To paint the chrome strip across the front edge of the hood along with the headlights chrome trim, only that instead of the matte black used on the XJR-S hood strip, I painted it the same color as the rest of the car (BRG). Overall, it looks far cleaner and neater than the stock version.
Here's a pic from my friend's '93 red coupe XJR-S showing matte black on the hood's trim strip and stock red on the headlights surround trim piece, clearly suggesting a "sportier" or, perhaps, "performance" oriented example. His car is all stock, so no mesh grille...
I also include a pic of my own '94 with the performed mesh grille work. I also have the same hood emblem that you installed, the "4.0 Litre" growler matching the green color.
