Default mysterious round knob under steering column
mysterious round knob under steering column, can anyone tell me what this may be? 1988 xjs v12, thought it may be to dim the dash lights or something but yet when turned i cant see any changes anywhere, on anything.

Yes, that's the rheostat to dim the dash lights. Not uncommon for it to be inoperative.

If the panel lights work at all the rheostat wiring is connected. Cleaning the resistor band and wiper with electrical contact cleaner often helps

It's also possible that the PO has connected all the wires to one side of the rheostat in an effort to brighten the lights.

Yes the dash lights do work, some what kinda dim so i'll try a little cleaner.

would that actually work? it would be nice to have brighter lights, but however the original werer are fine w/ me
