Default New Member -- XJS wire wheels question

Hi friends,

New member here. I've been lurking for a while but decided to come out into the open. Great forum, helpful people, and a great source of information.

I have a '69 XKE roadster and a recently acquired 1995 XJS 4.0 convertible (and some other non-jag cars).

Question about the XJS: I like the stock alloy rims, but I prefer to change to spokes (Dayton or similar). After cruising the forums, I'd summarize my reading of wire wheel issues as:

1) these were not factory approved, but offered by dealers to customers who wanted more bling.

2) Unlike the alloy rims, spokes are hardly maintenance-free. They need to be tuned. They are also inherently weaker, and under high loads some feel these could break. And, spoke rims can be a royal pain to clean.

My question is about the SIZE of the rims. The XJS right now has 16" stock alloys. But I'm seeing 15" by 7" spoke rims offered for sale that are claimed to fit the XJS.

Can I drop the rim size down 1"? Any thoughts?

Ed

The early cars had 15" wheels so that should not be an issue.

The only problem with doing to 15" wheels is that the selection of XJS-appropriate tire sizes is limited. Very little left to choose from these days if you want a performance/sports/premium 15" tires

If you're not too particular about the kind of tires you use, no big deal.

Cheers

Hmmm....I never thought about the selection issue. Good point. I just looked at the selection of 15" vs 16" tires, and there's no comparison.

I understand that there are older and newer Dayton wheels. Newer have more spokes. Do not buy a set of older ones. I think they should have 72 out more.
