Im about ready to paint my 94 xjs convertible 2 + 2. It has peeling paint... I have all the equipment to do it including a 60 gallon compressor, now I need to purchase the paint. Has anyone tackled this job before? How much paint did you use? Can I get away with 3 quarts or will it take a full gallon? I have a gallon of clear coming and received a quote from a local supplier. He wants $180 for 3 qrts of prospray paint. I can also get a gallon for about $220 of matrix sytems paint.

Any painting experts out there?

 

I'm not an expert , but I have painted a couple of cars in my home garage including an XJ6 and a couple of Mercedes SEC coupes which are bigger cars then an XJ-S.

I also have a 60 gallon compressor which does a good job and usually buy paint by the gallon as I like to have some for redo. If your paint is mixed 1:1 with reducer, then 3 quarts should be enough. If you mix it 2:1 then you may be getting close.

I use Nason paint which is Dupont's budget line, it's great for painting a whole car.

Shoot 3 coats of base and 3 coats of clear and make sure that you're painting in temps that are over 70 degrees and your gun is setup correctly. I tried to paint a car in December and had nightmare runs. I did the redo a few weeks ago in 77 degree weather and it came out like glass from the gun.
